Great point. I love these outliers that can be used to prove out the averages. We can show this to all the other alcoholics younger than her.
Wait. They're all dead.

Re: Ever give up Booze?
No intention of giving up a glass of wine now and again, cup of coffee or even the very occasional herbal cigarette , but one benefit of living onboard is that it is much easier to cut down on the masses of nasty sugar and heavily processed foods in general so many of us in the unhealthy west consume every day.

Re: Ever give up Booze?
Started sailing and racing Hobie cats 30+ years ago and one of the many fun things that I enjoyed about it was having a beer or two in the morning while getting ready to race, it seemed like the thing to do! Of course the regatta was probably sponsored by Captain Morgan and lots of booze about all weekend, geez this sailing stuff seems like it is going to be fun! Many years later and almost 15 years in the Caribbean it still seems as if boating and booze sure do go together. Can't help but notice how much it affects some couples as the constant heavy drinking really puts on the weight and I only have to watch them on the bow setting an anchor to wonder how they move about the decks in heavy weather or in an emergency situation! Moderation in everything is very important but that seems to get lost in the shuffle sometimes!

Ink wells in my elementary school desk. Progressing from writing with 2b lead pencils to the ink pen. Ink all over your fingers while you changed your nib. Blotting paper. And then there was the ink monitor who's role was to fill the desk ink wells. So what does this all have to do with drinking problems? Well it brought back a memory of one poor boy in class who certainly had a drinking problem. He took his ink well and downed the hatches to gasps from the rest of the class. I'm sure he progressed later in life to other toxic mixtures.
Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said, "I only drink to make other people interesting"
For me I have a glass of wine on a Friday night and one on Saturday lunch. Nothing during the week. Not that I can't hold my liquor. Give me a bottle of vodka and I can drink most men under the table. But as I've gotten a wee bit older and more respectful of my grey matter I am protective of what's between my ears.
I don't need to drink to hold an interesting conversation. And I don't need to drink to cope with time alone.
I don't want to be judgemental because heaven knows I have downed more than my fair share. But from what i understand if you drink daily then you are hurting your liver and other organs and current thought is you do have a drinking problem.
But each his own. And I pass no judgement on anyone. People are free to make their own choices even it is as crazy as little John who downed the ink from his ink well.

This I agree with. I don't give a rats ass what you do as long as you are not harming anyone.
Sad as it might be to watch a person die from their addiction, your personnel pain of it is self inflicted by your need to control their behavior. It's equally painful to watch a person die from cancer, diabetes, MS, Alzheimer etc. But would you try to blame or control them into being "healthy" just for your own sense of what is "right"? Yes people make unhealthy choices sometimes, but that's their choice, not yours. Enjoy their company while they are here, or shun, shame, and vilify them. I posted the Elizabeth quote half joking. I personally have never excluded or shunned non smokers/drinkers. Religious zealots, yes. I offer food and drink to any guest, choices of everything from water, soda, beer, wine, alcohol. I don't smoke in places that might affect others. If your habits don't make me bleed or harm me why should I spend a second of my day concerned about it?

Re: Ever give up Booze?
Many times, resumed nearly as many...but with a different outlook each time, I enjoy the burn/flavor of a decent scotch on rocks, but... too many removes too many inhibitions and is good for no one. I sip Irish Cream from various vendors, for the price and flavor prefer McCormick of late. Enjoy a decent dark beer on occasion, do not drink prior to work or competition, had my share of blackouts and accidents in my younger years, learned that life lived well requires balance, I do not enjoy being out of balance or around those that are.
I am addicted to smoking, I am not addicted in that way to any other substances I have consumed.

Guess I'm chicken.... When I get "The Word" in a PM from a mod I back off. Mostly. Well, pretty much.
