A license is only something they can take away from you. I gave mine up after 15 years because I refuse to piss in a bottle for anyone (other than for valid medical reasons) and I was also tired of ferrying drunks around.

I gave up my license when the Coast Guard wanted me to Fly from Nice, France to New York to piss in a bottle. I spent hours on the phone trying to get them to let me go to an air base in Germany or Rota, Spain where there's a naval base. But the Coast Guard insisted that the test had to take place at a "Coast Guard Approved Facility" and the closest one to me was in New York. More than once I screamed in the phone "YOU MEAN THE COAST GUARD DOESN'T APPROVE OF THE NAVY (OR THE AIR FORCE)?"

The fact that I couldn't have passed at the time, anyway, has no bearing whatsoever on the lunacy of the Coast Guard's requirement. Besides, after nearly 18 years I was tired of ferrying drunks in yachts and snuff-dipping rednecks and cajuns in crewboats. A license is only something they can take away from you.

Oldsalt, you don’t make a very good argument against mandatory testing and with that attitude I think your departure was mutually beneficial.
