Waves smash Kowie yacht

You're never home until you're home.

“AFTER sailing 5000km , the last 500m proved the most dangerous for a Port Alfred boat builder when his luxury yacht was slammed onto rocks by massive waves yesterday in the treacherous Kowie River mouth.

Watched by dozens of horrified spectators , there were several anxious moments as National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteers swam with ropes to the stricken R1.8million catamaran and used two boats to pull 55-year-old solo sailor Dennis Schultz and his yacht to safety...”

"Alfie's" is a TERRIBLE address to go home to! It's only a few feet deep at best, and treacherous because the channel moves across the mouth. Local knowledge is all-important, and really only the locals would do it, and Dennis is one of the few ppl I know of who would take a cat thru! But his cats are quite special- sort of Darts-on-steroids, and they go like heck. Easy enough to squirt one through the breakers on the Kowie, so for one to get trashed like that must mean gear-failure.
