Volvo Ocean racers take a rain check on the Indian ocean
This caught my attention. Given all the issues and opinions about where it is and is not safe to sail, interesting to see this development!
Five multimillion-dollar yachts involved in the Volvo Ocean Race are being transported on an armed ship through the Indian Ocean because of the threat of piracy.
Organizers say the decision to load and ship the boats — because the area was deemed too dangerous to sail — is unprecedented in the sport.

I've been following this. Kind of wondered if it was a good deterrent to the real sailing that was going on. But it looks too real. High dollar trip!

Here i am bashing my way north shredding up virtual sails and getting my virtual sea miles currently struggling to hold a rating below 10,000th place and the real sailors are snuuggled up cozy on some hired liner. Damn Im virtually exhausted and worried about being attacked by virtual pirates. no Fair

Why organizers will send boats to a dangerous area and then ship them elsewhere is beyond me. As it is, it is no longer a RTW race, is it?
VOR and AC are two examples of what sailing becomes when it is all about money, marketing and management.

Probably about commercial sponsership by an Arab nation.
I don't actually know but sponsors drive most sports thesedays.

Heck, I can barely stay in the top 50%, let alone run with you big dogs! Of course, I only come up a couple of times a day to check sails and wind, so all that leisure time has me well-rested for the party atmosphere in Abu-Dhabi!

Re: Volvo Ocean racers take a rain check on the Indian ocean
It makes sense to me. Piracy in that area is not showing any sign of slowing down. The last race, they mentioned it on the way to India, and again while the boats were heading down the Malacca strait. So it doesn't surprise me that someone decided having these high value targets in the area didn't make a bunch of sense. Of course if one did get grabbed, perhaps the sponsors would say "tough luck fellas!" leaving them high and dry in some Somali dust bowl, and use the loss for tax purposes.

Seems a bit barmy, it would have been better to go straight to China from Cape Town, or since they were willing to go to the expense of hiring an armed ship why didn't they hire armed escort vessels for the boats instead?
