Video of Superyacht Yogi Sinking in Greece

See video of superyacht Yogi sinking in Greece | Motor Boat News | MBY

This shocking video shows the 200ft superyacht Yogi sinking in heavy weather off the Greek island of Skyros this morning. (17th Feb)
Eight people were on board the boat the superyacht at the time, but all were winched to safety by the Greek airforce.

The Greek coastguard reported that the rescue operation began at 7.30am Greek time this morning and lasted roughly an hour.

All those on board were taken to Skyros Health Centre for a precautionary check-up.

Reports on the Greek coastguard website said mechanical failure was to blame for the sinking, which happened in a north-westerly Force 8.

Re: Video of superyacht Yogi sinking in Greece

Island Hopper,
Thanks for posting. Makes us wonder as we start a week charter Sunday in Croatia about the weather here this time of year. Cruise was scheduled based on my son and his new wife's college schedule, her parents also came and we are going out on her uncles charter boat with her aunt coming along as the cook. They are from Croatia but fled in the political unrest 12 yrs ago.(her uncle & aunt didn't) Never checked the weather as was only week fit kids schedule. Me bad for not checking that! Good part is it is on the other side of Greece in the Adriatic versus the Aegan Sea. Wonder how big the deductible on Yogl was? As David M said looks like major boo-boo!
Thanks again,
John & Carol

Thanks SS will remember that.
As am still a newbie to sailing on my own am glad to just get out in almost anything but as you predicted we already met "the Bora" with a quick 32 knot burst this morn. The water & air temps here are warmer than our N Texas Lakes on the postive side. Most amazing thing so far today was that we saw 12 people SURFING in full gear in Croatia! Who would have thought! Or is that just because we were by The Moorings Resort??

What about her 26, 420 gallon capacity of diesel fuel?

My Deep Diver Cert. only gets me down to 300' leaving me 850' short.

She had cabins for 12 guests & 12 crew incl housekeeping but only 8 were on board?

She was less than a year old!
Leaves a lot of questions such as who is going to cleanup the diesel etc unanswered but would bet she was insured!
So do they have any liability?
Just saying,
John

Re: Video of Superyacht Yogi Sinking in Greece

Boats can be recovered. That might make someone sweat if it is determined exactly how the boat sank. Boats get scuttled occasionally by people who would rather have the insurance money than the boat.

A boat that size would be compartmentized with a minimum of four or five watertight transverse bulkheads, if it was designed properly. Chances are good it would also have been built to a classification societies standards, like ABS or Lloyd's Register for example. Most mega-yachts are built to one or another classification societies standards. All of these organizations have standards for compartmentization. Meeting one of the classification societies standards keeps insurance rates down.

One of the classifications for ships is how many compartments can be flooded before the vessel is too unstable to be considered safe. They are called one compartment ships, or two compartment ships, etc. This of course also varies with how much cargo they are carrying and the metacentric height.

I am not saying it was scuttled, but I would not rule out the possibility either.

This story raises the possibility of crew error in managing the flooding rudder compartments, and securing water tight doors. It will be updated as the investigation unfolds.
