Tropical Cyclone Yasi to Hit Queensland Coast

Apparently there was great concern that it would hit one the larger population centers and the Air force had 2000 body bags ready.

The Breakwater marina would have been like Hinchenbrook if the cyclone had have tracked south but seems to have passed the test up to Cat 3 OK.

On another note, I grew up in Cairns/Townsville and watched the cyclones every year.
I have lost 2 houses due to cyclonic winds.

Every year the government/ media go on about storm surge.
And yet every year the cyclones seem to hit at low tide.
I don't know why, it can't be just luck? but i have seen it time and time again.

Obviously the marina at Cardwell was not designed properly (Short piles) I guess, who allowed it to be built to a cat 3 cyclone???
With the global warming concept totally swallowed by governments we would never ever see the past weather patterns return,I quess.


If the cyclone had hit at high tide all of those boats would have been in Alice springs by now.

Time to enforce a taller pylon rule. Double the height of expected surge/flood heights for any 1/100 event. Lets face it, They are primarily cement. It cant be that expensive. Although the builders may need a bigger crane- so be it.

We had our boat on a mooring in Trinity Inlet/Cairns for Cyclone Yasi -- while we were sweating it out in Vietnam! No damage, thankfully, since Yasi veered south in last hours and spared us ... our boat "watcher," a long-time seaman who runs a slipway in Cairns, kept us on the mooring since he thought we'd have more damage being banged about in the cypress ... not sure if he would have been right if Yasi had hit Cairns, but all's well that ends well.

One concern I have as a cat owner is that Cat 5 winds can get under the bridgedeck of a cat, and lift it clean up ... I heard one passing news report during anxious moments of tracking Yasi from afar of just that happening ...

Any thoughts?

There are many reports of light weight multihulls being flipped in Cyclonic storms if moored or anchored in open waters. On 2 occasions in the Philippines I opted to tie off in spider web fashion in a mangrove lined creek. Rode out several hours with no damage
