It's about time some one might do something offensive instead of after the fact.

Re: Somaliland Struggles To Fight Piracy

Somaliland is not internationally recognised as an independent Country -they nonetheless have done a remarkable job in creating an independent and viable state

BBC News - Regions and territories: Somaliland

My guess is that the US & EU don't want to recognise it as a Country as sets a precedent for others seeking independence. But IMO a(nother) short sighted strategy by the West - lots of small countries are easier to dominate than single large messess - like Somali. Most of Africa could be divided into countries the size of Belguim.....and if that needs to follow tribal regions for a few hundred years - then so be it.

1/3rd of Somalia being sorted is better than 100% lawless and Somaliland could be a really useful ally in that region - especially to help keep the lid on the remaining bits of Somalia. and Yemen accross the water

Short term I would go for a Federal solution to Somali, where the 3 main regions have complete autonomy (except internationally) with the central "govt" made intentionally weak and powerless.......and initially as a UN protecterate to represent the country internationally.

Re: Somaliland Struggles To Fight Piracy

*crackin up*

I WONDERED how the topic changed so fast!

This is an interesting series... and such a frightening issue that seems to be spreading like a plague.

Sometimes I think to myself *this is just like the milk carton abductions... no real change, just more hype...*

But I really don't believe that. And this BBC report seems to confirm that its not the same ole same ole along the Barbary coast.

The report shows how it isn't just the obvious victims (sailors of all types) who are at risk, but that the people of the land are as well.
