Search and Rescue

I was upset to hear that the search for a single boater off Catalina Is. has now turned into a search for 10.The risks taken by those in this valuable service must be seriously considered by the public, before venturing out onto the high seas, who rely on these brave individuals to come when really needed. My prayers are with them.

The nighttime collision of a Coast Guard aircraft on a rescue mission and a Marine helicopter left nine people feared dead at sea Friday as investigators tried to solve the mystery of how the aircrews failed to see each other in a heavily used military training area.

The Sacramento-based C-130 crew was looking for David Jines, on 12-foot motorized skiff, who was reported missing after leaving Avalon Harbor on Santa Catalina Island to reach a friend on a disabled yacht that had gone adrift off Catalina in high winds Tuesday, authorities said.

Re: Search and Rescue

highseas:

David Jines was my brother.

I am so very sorry that this entire event happened, but to blame him for the crash of two highly skilled and trained helicopters is ridiculous and cruel.

Re: Search and Rescue

So very sorry for the loss of your brother, LynMarie, but this thread is from 12 years ago and reflects a highly unusual situation.

While I can't speak for highseas (and his last appearance on this Forum was in 2016), his intention, rather ineptly expressed, was that sailors employ prudent seamanship. I certainly do NOT think he was blaming your brother.

Of course, if (as I'm understanding it) your brother went out in search of and to assist a friend, he was brave, selfless and noble.

Sorry that as a new Member, you've come across such an old and painful chapter.

Glad you're still sailing! Your brother would be proud of you.
Warmly,
