Re: Sailboat piloted by 86yr and 71yr old washes ashore

There is another perspective to this story that is equally important and that is in a free society people are allowed to be stupid as long as they are knowingly responsible for the consequences of their actions. On the surface, it appears that the two sailors were unprepared for their journey and perhaps that cannot be argued. But, how many ill prepared people have we all met along the way that accomplished considerable passages with poor boats, poor skills, and physically less than perfect shape? And then, there is that last thought . . . when we're gasping for our last breath of life and staring into the maw of Death . . . will You have any regrets? By then, it's too late.

being over the hill myself and not yet having completed my bucket list, i have to agree with you, rognvald.

but i still maintain that the best thing that happened to these two guys is that they drifted onto a beach in a well populated area.

86 and 71 hey? Probably Moderators on CF. So you'd want to be careful of your criticisms.

Hmm. Would they have fired an EPIRB, if they'd had one?

My dad sailed RTW in his late 60s early 70s. He is now 86 and travels the US in a land yacht with my mom who is 15+ years younger. He is the youngest old guy I know .
