Re: Sailboat holds up bike race...
Ha ha, that's hilarious. The event should have been better scheduled. Either don't cross lift bridges or tell the lift operator it can't be lifted unless its an emergency.

Kinda a neat payback for riding three and four abreast.

The funniest thing is the cop falling off his bike.

And the unfunniest thing is that you think that's funny.

Re: Sailboat holds up bike race...
Either a serious lack of planning on the part of the race organizers or a serious breach of duty on the part of the bridge operator. Either way, heads should roll; there's no excuse, although the sailor is, of course, blameless.

Re: Sailboat holds up bike race...
You wont ever see that happen during the Tour De France... . But it would be funny as hell if it ever did...I can just imagine the commentary now.
Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen would blow up.

Re: Sailboat holds up bike race...
The funniest thing to me is how seriously the commentators are taking this. It's just a bicycle race!
And of course whoever planned a race that includes a drawbridge is a complete idiot.

Did it affect the race results?

I always feel very powerful when I ask a bridge to open for me

Re: Sailboat holds up bike race...
As a boater, I've obviously caused inconvenience for drivers and as a driver I've been inconvenienced. Scheduled bike events don't bother me too much. What does bother me are the weekend riders who take lanes of the road thinking they own it, riding side by side, with no consideration to automobile drivers.

You don't know how good you have it!
In my area, they ride on the wrong side of the road facing traffic as if they were walking. You either have to swerve into another lane and risk a collision or try to stop before hitting them. And of course, since they are coming towards you, their speed is added to your speed, not subtracted from it.

After waiting up to an hour for a restricted bridge, I have no sympathy for motorists. And for the two or three that were left in place after the state built high rise bridges because locals wanted them kept in place and got them designated as "historical", I have no sympathy for motorists or local residents.

I am particularly annoyed at the Bridge of Lions in Saint Augustine.
But... I guess they would have to open for the commercial vessels that go through every hour anyhow, even if it was a 65 foot bridge.

at the Bridge of Lions you get extra time after the commercial barge hits the bridge
