Re: Rebel Heart's wife has her say
Yes it's parents that try to eliminate all risks from life that are irresponsible, depriving their kids

Re: Rebel Heart's wife has her say
Huffpost's Personal section is a joke. But not nearly as big a joke as the whole Rebel Heart saga. Eliminating risks isn't the issue, preparation for them is. I give these parents zero credit for the preparation of the crew for this crossing and low credit for the boat and it's systems. Boo Hoo Cry Baby Blame Everyone Else It Wasn't Our Fault Nothing Could Have Prevented It.

Rebel Heart's wife has her say
Congratulations to Charlotte Kaufman for speaking up! A lot of us supported the Kaufman family after their rescue and the loss of Rebel Heart with unsolicited donations to help them get their lives restarted. Charlotte returned the donations graciously saying they were okay and appreciated the help but did not need it. Good for them for living a life of their own making and for putting their girls first. As Charlotte said so eloquently not everyone has to confine themselves to the limits of a typical Suburban life. May we all have the individuality and determination to live all the days of our lives.

Re: Rebel Heart's wife has her say
Right on Charlotte K . Well said.
Parents and parenting today have gone insane over the last couple of decades. What was once perfectly normal behaviour for kids and parents — so called “free range parenting” — can now net parents a criminal record and even result in the loss of their kids to the State. Allowing kids to walk a few blocks down a road, or play in a park unsupervised is now a crime in many places.
This is insane. And according some psychologists, is now having very serious impacts on the wellbeing of these “kids” as they grow up. I strongly recommend everyone read “Coddling of the American Mind:How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure ” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt.
I don’t know the details of the whole Rebel Heart saga, but the point she is making here is that not about this failed cruise. It’s about how parenting has gone way off the rails in North America.

Re: Rebel Heart's wife has her say
Yes absolutely 100% agree.
My first crop of kids we lived in a shack off grid and home-schooled, traveled to live long-term in over a dozen countries.
Back in Amerika people literally panic seeing them going for a walk a half mile from home.
Kids from six y.o. on should be taking public transport, two/three transfers to get to school, as is 100% normal around the world.
And crime rates are far far lower now than when I was growing up, I got mugged 4 times before I was 12 growing up did me no harm.

Especially when you can count on the taxpayer to spend 10,000 times the cost of rescuing you from a minor health incident in suburbia, as well as knowing that rescue personnel will place themselves at inordinate risk to their own safety because children are involved.
There are relative rebels, and there are relative free-riders. It's the latter that puts the spotlight on the boating community that brings regulations that no boater wants.
Note that the above (that I typed) has nothing to do with parenting styles, parent-shaming, etc. The practice of taking high-risk crew to sea is problematic in it's own right. When a community doesn't regulate itself, it gets regulated from outside--this is an inescapable paradigm. People who cheer on such activity today are inviting regulations that they will complain about tomorrow.

I've been on the receiving end (unfairly I'd say) of Charlotte's ire and that told me more about her personality than the puff piece on HuffPost.

Re: Rebel Heart's wife has her say
If people are blamed for requiring rescue, and
the issue is framed as "freeloading" off the government
and we're told to stop risking our lives and those of our dependents, just give up on going sailing,
in order to head off some abstract threat of over-regulation
My God what a pile of neo-liberal nonsense!
But going out and spending trillions murdering thousands of civilians yes women and children collateral damage in a "war on terror" we ourselves created both sides,
that's just fine, unpatriotic to object to those losses of blood and treasure.
Makes me sick.
Show me where to sign, do not rescue us, if we drown so be it.
