the west african coast is dangerous in general but the nigerian coast is particularly dangerous. i had diving support vessels working for me off the niger delta last year and they were festooned with razor wire. we had two small naval patrol boats with additional security personnel (u.k. ex-special forces) onboard. the patrol boats did piquet duty. oilfield supply boats are regularly boarded, ransacked and crew members taken hostage.
