What's the point of bringing it up? The family is happy that his remains are in the ocean in the boat he loved. They don't want the boat back.

OK, try this exercise. Pick any 28' sailboat sitting on the hard. Now take a couple of 30-foot tow straps, and try to run them securely around and under the hull, and fasten on four duffel bags (to emulate lift bags) above the gunnels. Remember, everything must be absolutely secure and in balance, because if it slips out, it is gone for good.

Now clock yourself, see how long that exercise took, and compare it to the bottom time, decompression time, from the dive tables. Add five or ten minutes or more, to compensate for the extra time you would have first spent trying to penetrate the boat & evaluate the situation inside.

And remember...there's probably some sail and rigging flapping around trying to entrap you as you move around the boat, and you need some safety margin for untangling in case that happens.

"Wet" divers at 300 feet? I don't think there's such a thing as "just another few minutes" for them.

I certainly didn't mean to diminish the difficulties and logistics... No easy feat to be sure...

In the 90s I did some recovery and salvage work. Raising a boat in 100'or even 50' of water is a feat. Raising one on rebreathers, Or trimix, in 300' with 1-2knots of current is suicidal.

I've wondered about that since the beginning of this thread.

A cruiser comes across a half sunken boat - take a picture and carry on?

Could have been someone afraid of what they'd find, or someone too simple to ask what was wrong. Sometimes people have reasons to be that way. At least they called it in afterwards.

Depending on the sea state, and if the photographer guy was singlehanding, it might have been very difficult/dangerous to tie up alongside and board the Jubilee. I'm sure he feels terrible now in hindsight.

I wouldn't be interested in laying blame at this point, but rather potentially learning something as I often singlehand a lot. I haven't had to confront anything like this, but I would think getting on the radio to USCG, Sea Tow, BoatUS, etc. would be the minimum, and then staying in the area until help showed up. I'd also try and prepare my dinghy for launching I suppose. If, however, the boat looked like it was going down before help arrived, and it was too deep to anchor, what would be the most seamanlike way of dealing with it? Heave to and head over in the dinghy? Seems awfully risky, but so is allowing another vessel to sink not knowing if anyone is onboard.

Again, none of us were there in this particular case and no purpose in assigning fault at this late date. I would be interested in reading what course of action more experienced singlehanders might take under a scenario like this.

Assuming a functioning radio, I had assumed that the location was close enough to Key Largo that range would not have been a problem.

Given the ratio of powerboats to sailboats in Key Largo, I wouldn't assume the photographer was a sailboater...

Probably a powerboats who got a laugh out of a sinking sailboat. It is amazing the level of distain that many powerboaters have for sailboats and their skippers.

That's a very offensive statement. I'll consider the source and ignore it as the breaking of wind from the south end of a north bound horse.

If any of you guys would read the reports it's pretty obvious that the person who sighted the sinking sailboat reported it before leaving the scene.

I would conjecture that they made a close pass by the boat saw no one in the cockpit and got no response to their shouts. Since it was sinking, they may have been afraid to board it. They obviously gave a very accurate position to the authorities or the divers would never have found it as quickly as they did.
