Re: Mistaken for pirates and killed!
I don't really understand how these big ships can have armed security details, but it's next to impossible for a yacht to carry a shotgun. Regardless, I'm sure this incident will make it even harder to carry a weapon aboard.

Guns (and alcohol), the cause of and solution to every problem.

Re: Mistaken for pirates and killed!
Isn't this a long way from the east coast of Africa? Have there been any pirate attacks of oil tankers in this area?

Stuff is everywhere (but still extremely unlikely):
Live Piracy Map
Referencing lies, damn lies, and statistics however, here's a map of the United States showing areas of "high" murder rates. These are cities that millions of people live long and happy lives in any problems. But if you see a map full of pirate attacks, it makes the world look pretty bad.

Re: Mistaken for pirates and killed!
Not to defend the security personnel if they acted recklessly but the pirates can be anywhere. They are hijacking long range fishing boats and small freighters, etc that gives them great range. For the most part they hang off the horn of Africa but their range of action has been growing ever larger as ships avoid the usual pirate areas.

The word will get around not to approach the merchant vessels--better to lose your nets than your life. Now if we can just get the Indian fishermen from approaching the yachts to beg for cigarettes and drinks...

Well, I guess the answer then is you just open fire on them a few times and that should discourage them.
I wonder if everyone would be so cavalier if it had been a couple cruiser that got killed instead of some poor Indian fishermen?

Re: Mistaken for pirates and killed!
Yeah, I hope I didn't sound cavalier. I think it's really terrible. I can't really imagine the circumstance where a tanker fires on fishermen. I would think they'd have to be at least brandishing weapons, if not shooting at the ship before a ship returned fire.
trigger happy indeed.

Re: Mistaken for Pirates and Killed !
My husband was boarded by 'pirates' during the Dubai Muscat Race back in about 2004. The yemeni 'fishermen' were on their way to Iran - smuggling in light bulbs. Yup, that was the black market product of choice back in them days. A cup of tea and a few cigarettes for the 'pirates', a tour of the cargo for the yachties, and a pleasant experience all round... I'm glad that there were no guns visibly involved.
I wonder if these Indian 'pirates' had guns? Apparently, according to the update, the Italian Navy were the shooters - and I would hope that they would not simply kill fisherman simply to avoid getting tangled in their nets.

That piracy map covers ONLY 2012. That means just 47 days. Look back at the attacks during 2011 and you will find many, many more. Closest attack to India was roughly 250 NM off Cochin.
We tracked piracy attacks from 3 sources for 3 years, stopping in Feb 2011 when we decided the attack level had exceeded our comfort level for transiting any further westward past India. We tracked all 3 sources because using only 1 source does not reflect all the attacks.

Yes, I realized it was only for 2012 so I took a look at noonsite's report for 2011 ( Noonsite: Summary of Security & Piracy Reports 2011), and didn't see any for India. Do you have sources that show any attacks anywhere near the location in question?

Here's the live piracy map for 2011:

India is somewhere on the right edge of all those balloons.
