Re: Missing Vessel (Northern California), 4 souls

No people names, ages? No boat name???

I hope for the sake of all that it is a hoax! I think it is a hoax! Too many times over the recent yeasr the CC has received similar distress calls here on the east coast.

Too early to flatly state its a hoax but for me it smells like one. And as others asked--"65 miles off the coast, in the winter?" Oh well--

According to local TV news, the name of the boat is "Charmblow."

That is more than was earlier posted. I am with everyone hoping this is a hoax.

That name is not listed in the documdentations file but it could be registered instead.

I have two small kinds onboard we we venture pretty far from the coast. That family could have been killed on a freeway accident and there wouldn't be a thread about it on any forum; bad things happen sometimes, and sometimes children are involved.

If the few facts that we know are accurate, I can't knock the guy for not having a life raft as much as not having a well thought out plan for what to do when you abandon ship. Even a dinghy or some paddleboards, coupled with some wetsuits, you can triple or quadruple your life expectancy. Put an EPIRB and a $50 strobe in there, and snag the handheld vhf while bolting off the boat, and you're not in too bad of a situation as long as it's not a full on storm.

We'll probably never know.

I can't imagine what those parents must be feeling, or felt, whatever the case may be at this point. The idea of watching your children freeze to death or drown. Horrible beyond words.

The position according to lat 38 was determined by bearings of the radio transmission. Doesnt look so much like a hoax. sounds more like a real emergency.

I guess if I start sinking I will have to remember there will be a bunch of jerks thinking it's a hoax.

There is a little bit more about the CG search and the background in the Latitude 38 online site.. Looks like it is not a hoax or at least if it was a hoax it was done from a boat at sea.

The only thing supporting a non-hoax scenario is the report that the Coasties place the source of the distress call as well offshore. Even if that does turn out to be accurate (and remember, that report originated from non-sailing news media, not the most reliable of sources when it comes to sailing news) every other piece of information we have, IMHO, says that this could very well be a hoax.

I don't see where you get off calling anybody here a "jerk." In fact, we should all be praying to God that it is a hoax.

Re: Missing Vessel (Northern California), 4 souls

Much as people complain about "Nanny states", the compulsory carrying of an EPIRB could have been invaluable here.

Hope it is a hoax. Otherwise it's a tragedy.

Re: Missing Vessel (Northern California), 4 souls

With the lack of more concrete information about the vessel, the identity of the crew aboard, the position of the event, and the absence of a missing persons report...

The only real evidence is the transmission from offshore.

How long will the Coast Guard continue to search?

If it were me and mine out there, I would hope the Coast Guard would keep searching in the off chance that I was able to improvise a solution for keeping everybody alive adrift out there.

If my group had perished, I would not want people risking their lives looking for my remains.

So where is the line in there?

I don't feel like this is a hoax, and until it is confirmed to be a hoax, the situation must be treated as if there are possible survivors out there. I hope that if there are people out there, they are still somehow alive.

The realist and sailor in me is less optimistic though.

Any thoughts?

I can't play the clip but over on Sailing anarchy they're saying the guy does not sound particularly distressed. In fact one poster speculated he sounded drunk.

He did mumble. Sounds like he could be scared, cold, drunk... Hard to say.

Re: Missing Vessel (Northern California), 4 souls

Epirb necessary if one wishes to be rescued.

We're drowning in laws, and yet live in notably lawless times.

My plans are to have a boat as unsinkable as I can make it, and fight hard to keep it that way. Relying on a radio or a glorified orange wading pool seems like misplaced priorities, and being forced into such a mindset is not wise or fair.

Let's see what comes of this before we get stuck into a good old knock down drag 'em out fight.....I hope it is a hoax and that the hoaxer gets caught and reamed under existing laws. No more please. And if it's for real, then may The Lord have grace and mercy on them.
