Re: Man and Six yo Daughter do Tasman Sea n 21 ft cat

An interesting case.
From the linked article, it appears the man/father/sailor did not want anyone to know where he was (so no EPIRB). I can imagine that would cause concern for the mother or other family members.

EXCERPT:
"Alan Langdon, 46, and his daughter, Que, sparked an international manhunt when they set sail from Kawhia Harbour on New Zealand's North Island on December 17.

Mr Langdon is reportedly in the middle of a custody dispute with Que's mother, Ariane Wyler. She reportedly hired Australian child recovery specialist Col Chapman to search for the pair, having done so once previously."
________

The 6 year old girl was "born on a larger boat" and the father/sailor was estranged from his wife (who had been with him and daughter on a larger catamaran that sank during a storm on Vanuatu).

Notice the type of boat (Tiki) which is a seaworthy design. But, the young girl and father would have been on that open deck (or below in hulls) for 27 days in the Tasman Sea.

No EPIRB because he didn't want anyone to know where he was? What a dick.

EPIRBS don't tell anyone where you are until you want them to!

I don't care what happened during the marriage. Disappearing with a child in a shared custody is cruel, disappearing in a manner such that the other parent worries for the survival of the child even worse.

Perhaps I should have worded my post better, and after looking at it again, I can see how my wording may be a cause for question. I understand that EPIRBs only indicate a position when used (activated). I regret if my quickly worded post was inaccurate in any way (I was having some problems copying the text/link/photo) and may have worded something that gave the wrong impression due to my hurry (my original post disappeared when I switched from one app to another so I quickly wrote it again to post).

What I meant to convey was that the sailor did not use an EPIRB to call for help.

He was quoted as saying:
""We were always safe, we just couldn't let anyone know," he said."

He may have felt no need for rescue or he may not have had the means to communicate or he may not have wanted his location known. Who knows?

I hope that clears any misunderstanding up, that may have been caused by my earlier post.

Re: Man and Six yo Daughter do Tasman Sea n 21 ft cat

Just wondering if joint custody is an option in NZ? Also, are the school holidays (vacations) the same as in Tasmania? Here, the primary school starts back up Feb. 8. It's Summer vacation now, in the southern hemisphere.

The Dad says, "She's happy" of the daughter, but that is so self serving that I question it. I would think the 6 yr. girl might be missing her Mom.

It is always so d-----d hard, when these issues happen, so hard on the child, as well as the parents.

The father is a personable looking man, I think he wants to drum up public support for his actions, which may be illegal in NZ.

After this goes through the courts the poor bloke probably won't spend time alone with his daughter again until she is 18.

Seems like a reasonable expectation that he might take the child and disappear at any time. Story said he left his live in partner of five months without any clue as to where he and the child was going. From my pov parental child abduction is parental child abduction - being a sailor and going on a boat doesn't change the abusiveness of the behavior.

Here is the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) News story about it. The dad says he had a broken rudder.

Man & 6 year old sail 6 m cat from NZ to Oz

A man in a custody dispute has taken his 6 year old daughter from New Zealand and sailed from the North Island to Ulladulla on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. They sailed in a 6.4 metre (22 foot) catamaran. See the photo below.

The following article details what is known:
Alan Langdon and six-year-old daughter found in Ulladulla after weeks at sea

The first part of the article is below:
A man and his six-year-old daughter have sailed into a NSW coastal town four weeks after they were reported missing in New Zealand.

The pair spent 27 days sailing across the Tasman Sea in a 6.4-metre catamaran with a broken rudder, reaching Ulladulla, on the South Coast, on Wednesday.

Alan Langdon and his six-year-old daughter, Que, have sailed into Ulladulla on the NSW south coast four weeks after they were reported missing in New Zealand.

Alan Langdon, 46, and his daughter, Que, sparked an international manhunt when they set sail from Kawhia Harbour on New Zealand's North Island on December 17.

Mr Langdon is reportedly in the middle of a custody dispute with Que's mother, Ariane Wyler. She reportedly hired Australian child recovery specialist Col Chapman to search for the pair, having done so once previously.
They must be the luckiest people alive to sail across the notorious Tasman Sea in this boat. Personally I think the book should be thrown at the father for subjecting his daughter to this amount of potential danger.

You can count on the media to make up their own stuff when they smell a story.
A hang of a lot of BS.

Agree, very surprising they are still alive! Must have been one hell of a trip.

Re: Man and Six yo Daughter do Tasman Sea n 21 ft cat

I think there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye.... mother in Switzerland who hasn't seen child for 20 months while father lives quite openly and legally with child in NZ...

And on arrival in Ulladulla walks straight up to the first policeman he can find...

Hmmmmm.

Doubt we will every know what its all about.

I think the Milton Ulladulla Times people should work on their video skills...
