Waaay cool story. One of my first thoughts was why not hire a young person to square away his life here legally and all that blah blah. And then just fly to Papeete and buy whatever boat may be available.

Either he has no interest in that or he is non compos mentos or whatever the term is. If so, I prefer he not be out there a third time.

One of those stepkids needs to stepup. They probably haven't even heard what's what.

In the late sixties I remember reading in a sailing magazine the story of a couple that set sail on a non-stop passage from England for South Africa in an old smallish wooden boat.

It seems that the doctors had given the wife just a few months to live. And, her death was going to be very painful.

The couple had always dreamed of seeing Africa, but didn't have money to travel their. So although they had no sailing experience whatsoever, they bought this little wooden sailboat, and filled it with tinned foods that they enjoyed.

So, even though neither of them knew how to sail and no one told them that they needed to clean the bottom of the boat, six months later they both arrived in South Africa.

In a postscript to this tale, the wife got better doing the voyage and lived for a number of years.

From the sub-text in this story I got the impression that if the wife didn't make it to South Africa neither would the husband. That is way Zee's post reminded me of this story.

Please don't bash the guy, he's 77 and seems to have gotten overwhelmed due to the conditions. Just glad he and his dog are okay.

I looked at both posts I am 70 myself with an 8.5 metre sail boat he was probably more worried about his dog than the boat. It did look as if he had had to much Genoa or foresail up and I think a well reefed mainsail might have helped just a very small handkerchief but all's well that ends well
