In the late sixties I remember reading in a sailing magazine the story of a couple that set sail on a non-stop
passage from
England for
South Africa in an old smallish wooden
boat.
It seems that the doctors had given the wife just a few months to live. And, her death was going to be very painful.
The couple had always dreamed of seeing
Africa, but didn't have
money to travel their. So although they had no sailing experience whatsoever, they bought this little wooden sailboat, and filled it with tinned foods that they enjoyed.
So, even though neither of them knew how to sail and no one told them that they needed to clean the bottom of the boat, six months later they both arrived in
South Africa.
In a postscript to this tale, the wife got better doing the voyage and lived for a number of years.
From the sub-text in this story I got the impression that if the wife didn't make it to South
Africa neither would the husband. That is way Zee's post reminded me of this story.
