Key West to Cuba Beach Cat Race November 2010

Hi, I am new to this board, I am an Australian living in Dallas. I race on a 32 foot Evelyn named S Cape and own two beach Catamarans one of which I race the 300 mile off shore Great Texas 300 (gt300.com)
I am working to set up a 4 day beach cat regatta to Cuba Nov. next year and was wondering if there are any beach cat drivers and crew that may have an interest in this event ... waiting on State Department approvals ... this event is being classified as a CULTURAL EXCHANGE so I feel we should not have any difficulties in obtaining the necessary clearances..

For any further information please contact me via PM.

Look forward to hearing from anyone!

John

Hi, John, and welcome to CF.

As a Hobie 16 owner & sailor (for 28 years), I'd love to do that trip...if I were 20 years younger!

Best of luck with your plans.

G'Day Hud, I race a Hobie 16 and I am going on for 63 we were racing in the Leukemia Cup Regatta here a couple of weeks ago with a gentleman of 82 and he was doing well on a Hobie 17. There is still time for you to strap on a cat and make the Cuba Run.

Hi John,This sounds like a great adventure. I may be up for it. I've sailed a Hobie 16 for nearly 30 years, but never in salt water. Maybe I should start!Ron

YES YOU SHOULD GIVE IT A GO... 95 miles is not so far when you are going 15 to 20 knots with the spinnaker flying and both driver and crew trapped out ..

I am retiring this fall and love sailing Hobie 16s in the salt water. (mainly around Negril, Jamaica.) This deal sounds just crazy enough to be some **** I might get into.

A couple of questions:

1) Are you looking for crew, boats, or both?

2) What are the rules?

3) How do you plan to return the boats to Key West?

A kick ass idea I must say.

Would like to gain offshore and / or racing experience.
I own and sail a Tartan 30 tall rig, and I crew on a cc 39 with skipper Orval Banfield , who is a retired captain of the Bluenose. My great ,great, grandfather; Thomas Hastings, was Captain of HMS Excellent, and an Admiral in the Royal Navy . I am from the same coast as Joshua Slocum.
I've been professionally employed in the forests of Nova Scotia for 24 years, now it is time to follow my true calling !
I am 46 years old , strong and athletic, 6 ft 2 ", 215 lbs , educated, dedicated, and competitive. I do not smoke, drink, or do drugs. I am willing to pay my share of the expenses ; start at the beginning and earn my way up.
