Karen picking on boat names!

It looks like an Australian Karen new to the marine scene is taking offence to some boat names in her marina. Bloody hell talk about get a life; it has been a tradition for years to have slightly tongue in cheek boat names. Just today in Hervey Bay I walked past a Beneteau called Sandy Crack.
Cheers

Perhaps someone should offer to sell her a ladder so that she can get over it.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

I think I will rename my boat "Woody WoodPecker"

Hope they kick her out of the club.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

I's pretty sad to name a boat something that will reduce your chances of finding a date.

Something tells me, though, that already wasn't in the cards.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

A few thoughts...

• Always love when newcomers move to an area because they love what's there. But once there, they proceed to demand the new place changes to be more like the place they just left. Seems to be common when urbanites move to more rural areas.

• How we interpret a message, or in this case a boat name, says as much about the receiver as about the author. It's (largely) up to the receiver to decide to be offended -- or not.

• People don't have a right not to be offended. This is what has been lost in our coddled societies these days.

• For those of us who immediately roll our eyes at this woman; what would offend you? Everyone has lines. What would an offensive name be for you? And would everyone agree? (I doubt it).

I get it though......a lot of people try to get cute with their boat names..

but the bottom line should be...is it understandable by the rescue folk when you are sinking and calling for help...

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

at a young age my first sailboat with a proper berth i named "blow me". if a karen protested the name i would state as innocently as possible that being a sailboat the wind is crucial for the boat to move thus the name.....footnote, my dock mate's boat was called "the passing wind"

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

I saw a clever boat name the other day on a trawler. There was a picture of a mermaid holding a dolphin fish, and the boat name was occasional hooker.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

On the other hand, I heard a British boat trying to hail the Moroccan Coast Guard on VHF. The boat's name was "Blow Me". I would call this an unwise choice for a boat name, particularly one in international waters.

Cheers!

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

There are some great names out there "Fugawi" was one of my favorites. As in where the f are we. Gotta love a heavy northeast accent.
My guess names like Berth Control, Dirty Oar, and Reach Around would send her through the roof.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

I don’t understand the folks with corny or cringeworthy boat names. It’s certainly not offensive. However when you see something that costs millions of dollars called Hooters VI, you got to wonder…..

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

What I would be reacting to, had it been me is that if you happen to be a woman with 20 yr. old daughters, you are likely to have experienced male chauvinisim all your life, from time to time. And, depending on how bad your personal experience has been, you may feel purely sick to death of misongyistic humor. Said form of humor is common throughout the sailing community here in Australia. For the non-chauvinistic among you, this woman's reaction would seem unfair. Male chauvinism is probably as hard to see in oneself as any other kind of prejudice, and that lack of awareness leads to other people societal problems, which have had some questionable sequelae.

I think Mike's sort of right, that we do not have a right not to be offended, and that's like a no brainer. No one every promised me I would not feel offended: it seems an irrational expectation. AND I also think smart, manly men who enjoy women letting other men know that denigrating women is not a nice look would be a good thing...albeit unlikely. Just my opinion, but there is a problem here, but it isn't boat names, it is the underlying culture that supports treating women badly.

Why is this kind of behaviour even called Karen? Because all of "the guys" want to kvetch about nagging women? It puts all women in the same barrel, and not all women are nags.

Ann

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

There are loose rules for boat
https://www.boatsafe.com/inappropria...ed-boat-names/
and specific ones for license plates

https://www.governmentattic.org/7doc...lates_2012.pdf
https://www.governmentattic.org/13do...lates_2012.pdf
https://www.governmentattic.org/7doc...lates_2012.pdf
Etc.
Seems as if some boat owners are lucky they don't have to register State boat names.

Re: Karen picking on boat names!

We named my vessel “Beating Blue” after consulting a list of 10,000. Registered Us boat names. We were shooting for something ambiguous with the possible ring of a race horse name. Like “ shattered glass” or “Mary’s Danish”. Beating Blue stuck Instantly triggering every owner with the word “blue” in their boat name.

But that’s not all

So possible people I have insulted:

1. It turns out that’s about 6 boats with-in 3 miles of my mooring.
2. Also all Yale grads in a 50 mile radius.
3. people who take issue with competition, the everybody gets a medal crowd.
4. The easily triggered.
5. Anybody who is resentful of a boat name other than a female name.

But really it’s just that it sails to wind well, at least that’s what I tell those triggered and looking to engage ( big grin), and the name rolls off the tongue.
