Jim Van Cleve attacked in Suva

Anyone who's been in Fiji especially Vuda Marina in the last few years would know Jim. One of sailings true Gentlemen who would help anyone.
Jim was attacked on his boat in Suva a few days ago the attackers used a machete . He has severe hand injuries & we are trying to raise some cash for his medical expenses at go fund me. There is a thread on FB with a link.

Moody Mike, maybe you could tell us more. I won't go to FB, and I know there are others who are FB phobic, as well.

For instance, does he require medivac? Are there WHO docs there who are able to help him? or Medecins sans Frontieres? [Doctors w/o Borders]? What I'm getting at is what does he want? need?

Any idea why he was attacked?

Ok there has been over $2000 raised to help pay Jim's medical bills he may lose his thumb but the surgeons are trying to save it. I called Vuda Marina to check and its all true. Looks like robery was the motive one offender is in custody & the other will be soon. If you know Jim & want to help there is a gofundme account set up. Jim is an American from Florida if I rember correctly , one of yachtings true gentelmen. He has helped many a sailor in Fiji.

Yes good to see all Jim's friends helping out. Latest news is they should be able to save his thumb. infection is always a big problem in the tropics so I hope that's under control hope .I contracted oystiomylitus from a scratch on my elbow while there.
I'm amazed how well this go find me thing had worked good to know .👍

I generaly feel very safe in Fiji. Hoping this is an isolated incident.

Once you become a local fixture, you get exposed to local violence on a number of real or imaginary counts.

Great news the offending party got caught and will be interrogated.

It is often with crime that one problem is it happens but the real problem it goes unpunished. So a single bad apple can create a feeling of a place being bad or unfriendly. Often a case in the Carribbean.

Good news Jim is out of hospital & doing well. The go fund me has raised more than the goal so Jim will be able to pay his medical bills & move back to a nice safe marina like Vuna with full security while he recovers. Thank you to everyone that helped out the response has been fantastic.
