It has started - France announces stricter border controls

This is not to raise a discussion about good or bad. Politics or this cause or another. It is to alert med sailors or those who have future plans of sailing the med that the feared clamp down on the Schengen travel has commenced.

It has just been announced that Western European Countries forming most of the Schengen countries have instituted through agreement tighter border control restrictions on each nation states borders.

We are now seeing the disintegration of the Schengen. A big crack in the wall that may or may not cause a complete breakdown of Schengen but will at least a change the situation of the free flow policy that we have come to know. Time will tell but either way things are definitely changing. For the better or worse in my opinion is difficult to see. Time will tell.

I had raised this same concern about security, when the Syrian refugee exodus ballooned out of control.

I think a wise cruiser in the Med should anticipate stricter controls and restrictions as governments react towards more of a war footing

Schengen allows that for 6 months, in special circumstances like the one that France is experiencing.
Malgré Schengen, la France peut remettre en place un contrôle aux frontières

But terrorism and massive immigration flux will have as necessary consequences the increasing of border controls on the entrance of Schengen space.

Sorry to point out but you are not up to date with the latest. It is now tight border controls within Schengen countries. Not just entry points into Schengen but country to country borders within Schengen.

Judging by the Muslim refugees and their boat handling skills.. I am quite confident that they wont be so much hanging round small marinas trying to hitch rides with yachties. Most seem to not be able to swim or confident in sea survival techniques..
Plus most of the people that live on boats or cruise are trying to escape the countries that the refugees are trying so hard to get to.. We going the wrong way..lol

Funny, I thought that I was up to date. The link that I posted is from today's news referring to a measure that was taken today by EU

"EU nations agreed Friday to immediately tighten checks on all travellers, including European nationals, at the external borders of the passport-free Schengen area following the Paris attacks, European sources said.

Interior ministers from the 28-nation European Union also backed France's call for a fundamental revision of the Schengen deal to allow the "systematic" controlling of EU citizens at borders, the sources said....

"Contrary to what we think, it's very easy to enter and leave the European Union without being spotted," said criminologist Christophe Naudin, a specialist in fake documents.

"We should think of Schengen's entry controls as pretty much non-existent."

"He's not the only one. The only solution is to employ biometric checks at the European level. All airports, all borders. But we're a long way from that."

The massacre of 13 November in Paris has already bolstered politicians across the continent who have been calling for a tightening of the borders and increased cooperation between intelligence services.

As I said France is a special situation. Some other countries are making controls on borders due to the immigrants flux problem. There is no measures taken by EU to implement again border controls between Schengen countries.

Thans for the clarification. I heard a news report that stated internal country border crossings will be implemented. I do think we will see more inspections and a general more aggressive stance to all types of travelers. Much like what we saw after 9/11 in the USA. But it is all very understandable. I see no reason to abandon plans of future travel in the Med. Just would be wise to expect more checks I would think.

refugees are everywhere in eu. cant go even freely in forest not to worry about refugee zombies.

I anticipate sentiment will turn hard way as so many times in history. That swedish guy that shot 100 or so kids is the mainstream direction i believe.

however, may not play that simple....

I agree. I would avoid to go sailing on Greek/Turkey Island's border since there not only the controls are going to be more frequent as you risk to be faced to the dilemma of what to do if you find a refugee boat in trouble with people dying. The Med is big and has many different locations to sail, even in Greece or Turkey.

I have sailed this year for three months on the med and the only refugees I saw (and already kind of taken care off by the population and authorities) was on a port in Catania (South of Italy) and I did not saw more than 3 or four.

That story about zombie refuges just does not make sense. In Europe there are a strong tradition of social solidarity and refugees are being transferred to all European countries and settled with dignity. I believe that Europe has finally understood that it has to do something regarding the origin of the problem and those terrorist ISIS attacks in France have helped that decision.

The last UN council resolution is proof of that and Russia and US would have to reach quickly an agreement regarding Syria or they will be looked as being a part of the problem instead of a solution.

Don't dream, chengen will stay for the econnommi. In the best case comme there a agreement that U.s. pasportholders longer can stay if Europeans also longer can stay in the U.S.

A politic issu that verry complicatet is. Other countries will later the same!

Going into France at Basel today, negligibly slower. i.e. 20 seconds instead of 15. A few more militia and auto machine guns on display. Still, nowhere near as tough as getting into the U.S.

Re: It has started - France announces stricter border controls

Rest assure: people can still cross EU borders without being checked or even seen.

One friend traveled from the Netherlands to Belgium this weekend, and another from the Netherlands to Germany.

Both said the exact same thing: no checks whatsoever. Empty, open borders where everybody could cross either way at will.

Since there are more than a few home grown people with less then warm & fuzzy feelings towards their country living in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, it would have made sense if there was at least some form of border control, but nope.

Not sure why they are always surprised to discover people aren't where they thought they'd be

Some might, looking on the situation in Europe, observe the following. They wanted their Muslims, now they have them. What they will do with them, who knows, given that they, Muslims do not seem to assimilate very well, perhaps because they don't want to, perhaps because assimilation has been made difficult or is difficult.

Re: It has started - France announces stricter border controls

I live in a predominantly muslim neighborhood (and Rotterdams mayor is from Marocco originally, and a muslim), no real problems here. Mostly, we all get along just fine. Your post is generalizing a LOT of people, Alan2, and you're making some assumptions that, in my experience, only apply to a minority.

Racism is obviously an issue (not just here but pretty much in the Western world), especially these days since scared people don't think rationally and become afraid of muslims in general - and then it can become a self fulfilling prophecy.

But that's a whole nother discussion, and not one for these forums I think

The subject is border control, and so far most people haven't noticed any real changes.
