Iguana eater's boat

Found out the name of the boat that those people were on. It's called " Wild Sea Monkey", a C & C 30, red.

If the Bahamian's are really worried about their Iguana population, Florida will be happy to share a few--thousand--Alien Iguanas Overrun Florida Island

FWIW...

Unfortunately I believe we are going to just have to live with them here in Florida. Like the article says "They swim" Even if you could eliminate them from the island at two hundred eggs per female it's a losing battle. Especially at a time in this economy, Florida is not going to put the iguana eradication high on it's list of things to do. Those others that think we only have the one Green species here are wrong. We have representatives of practically all iguana types in too large of numbers. We have pet stores all over that will sell you practically any species you want. There are plenty of stores in South Dade that will be happy to get you anything you want in exotic lizards regardless of the law, which enforcement is basically non-existent. Mostly young kids buy these as pets and when they tire of them, well, the rest anyone can figure out. Before this one gets shut down, sorry Mods, but Bamboo Chicken is a legitimate term in Belize and a common practice. Stating a truth should not be taken offensively nor construed as a bad joke.

Tellie, unless you are a zoologist, which I sincerely doubt, you've got to understand that the Bahamian iguanas are probably their own, endangered species. If you believe you know better, please contact them with your island repopulation plans...All over this forum (and the world) I often get the feeling that people are willing to let this or that species go. Heck, it's only one species...and theres so many that look just like 'em, and they dont do 'nuthin fer me... The Bamboo chicken thing is funny, but it might be inappropriate in a thread where someone has posted because they are truly worried about the future and ecology of a treasured island. BTW, if you get a chance, post the names of those pet stores that can get ya "anything". I have a friend that might be "interested".

Christian--

FYI, in addition to Black Spiney Iguanas, the same Green "Bahamian" Iguana's are here in Florida and they are all a problem. (Especially in the winter when a cold front comes through. They get so cold that they "go to sleep" and simply fall out of the trees. Some friends of ours had a nice 4' long, 30+ pounder, land on the hood of their car two weeks ago! Played heck with the hood but had no eveident "impact" on the lizzard.) Among other problems, the critters screw up power and phone lines, undermine dunes and dune grass; and, are killing off the bird population. And, they have no natural enemys--save a few Mexicans that will actually kill and cook the damned things once in awhile.

As for "Endangered Species", species have been coming and going for billions of years. That's part of the circle of life. No human is going to change it. (Moreover, at this point it's the humans that are the endangered species.)

As for the bozo's that killed and cooked the Iguana in the Bahama's, they deserve a good ass-kicking. Not because they killed the lizzard but more-so because they ignored Bahamian law. That's the kind of behavior that makes life hard, and expensive, for all of the rest of the cruisers-even those that don't like their lizzard medium rare.

FWIW...

SVHylyte, you've just made a great example of yourself. The Exuma Island iguana, Cyclura cychlura figginsi, is an endangered species unto it's own. See here, if you care: Iguana Specialist Group (formerly the West Indian Iguana Specialist Group)
Now, I'ze no'wd dat dey all looks alikes, but dey aint! As for your statement about Darwinian evolution, I have to wonder how you come up with this stuff? If man clubs or eats ALL of a species, is that nature to you? If pollution kills off a species, is that natural law to you? How did you determine that humans are endangered? Is it because we are spreading like a virus across the planet, unable or unwilling to check our population growth and therefore our use of the earths limited resources as our political and religious leaders look silently on? Inquiring minds want to know...

Mods, I'm sorry, but this does pertain to the islands that we cruise, and voices worries about threats to the life we all aim to lead.

With all due respect to you CV, unless you're a zoologist why should I consider your opinion on the species any more valid?

As far as the Bamboo chicken I meant it as a joke based in reality. If others are so easily offended by such I apologize. But I sincerly doubt your skin is so thin.

Speaking as a zoologist, the issue is the survival of the indigenous species that iguana will displace from a habitatat alien to the iguana, not whether iguana should be allowed to survive outside their own habitat ...

Hope I don't take this too far from the original thread...but...We as a Human race are spreading like wildfire. IMHO every problem in our society can be attributed to over population. Housing shortages, food shortages, water shortages, a long list of natural resources. Increases in crime, inflation and so on. I'm amazed at some of the issues that politicians address and turn a blind eye to population growth. You can band-aid all our shortages with money and programs but until you go to the root of the problem it will continue to raise it's ugly head. Education of the problem is key and there would be plenty of resistance from the "right" AKA moral majority.
Ok...there...I said it!

Tellie, I'm not a zoologist. I'm an amateur Natural History filmmaker. I have studied zoology, but I'm not asking you to consider my opinion at all. Follow this link (previously posted): http://www.iucnisg.org/actionplan/ch2/exumaisland.php
and read for yourself. At the end of the webpage there are three phone numbers of REAL LIFE scientists who are experts in this endangered species. Feel free to call them. They care.

Mods, Jacques Cousteau himself realized and wrote of the dire consequences of over-population. This man cruised all over our beautiful Earth, and witnessed the eradication of several species. Just as the Seven Seas Cruising Assoc. guidelines teach environmental awareness, I cannot stand by and read posts on this forum which I believe are truly detrimental to the cruisers way of life and their continued experience. In other words, I want the flora and fauna to be there when I arrive too, and not just read about it in a twenty year old cruising guide.
