Icebergs off the Starboard quarter
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411749/879210
Interesting wee news article. I came across this via a Trademe (NZ version of Ebay) auction for a guy trying to raise money. He wants to go live on one of these things till it melts. The purpose is to raise Clobal warming awareness. ummmm, yeah OK so he may have the sixpack but he is missing the plastic thingy that holds it all together ;-) :-)

I think that's pretty funny, especially after I looked at the link you gave. The first item under "Headlines" at the right was http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/425824/879728 which is titled "Icebergs likely to break up within week". He better hurry.
Or maybe somebody should tell him that icebergs are dangerous...

They reckon the real big one maybe vissible from land sometime late next week. They are drifting at ruffly 2Nm/day at the mo. But they are also breaking up fast now. They managed to get a chopper out to take some film of the closer ones. The one they filmed had a cliff face of 100m(300ft) so what is below must be a collosul amount of ice.
If someone goes and pitches a tent on one, I imagine he is going to become a strong contender for Darwin awards.

Here is the link to the Trademe add, so you can see this nutter and the other nutters paying out the cash. Only thing I can think is, maybe he's not a Kiwi. ;-)
Nah, I wish him the best really, but still, he's gotta be nuts.

Apparently the administrators of the "trademe" site think he is a nutter as well, since they have pulled the add....

An update on the bergs. It seems a couple of them are quite close now. One is approx 45Nm off the coast of the South Island at ruffly the same latitude of Dunedin. They have drifted some distance and the biggest ones may actually make it some ways further North yet, as the life expectancy is still a month or more. To also put the life time in perspective, these bergs have been adrift for ruffly five years now, so a month or more left is not out of the question. However, we are getting some very warm weather coming down from the tropics at the mo, so I guess they will melt rather quickly from now on.

The first Berg was sighted from Land today. The Hills around Dunedin gave the Locals down there a very good view. It was very impressive and was ruffly 50Km (25Nm) off shore, so that gives you an indication just how big the things still are. Although they are breaking up rather rapidly now.

Actually made the news on TV over here. Thought it would be pretty cool, literally, to get your boat into the little bay it seemed to have for a happy snap.
May not be the safest thing though, but it would still make a nice back drop from 500 metres away.

Guys at the Marina in Mana are getting ready to pick ice cubes out of the strait for their rum and cokes.

If the weather wasn't so damn bad at the mo, it'd make one heck of a trip to go take a look. :-)
