Didn't a whale sink a J boat off Baja California 2 years ago?

so that makes Whales 4, Sailboats 0....

According to this motor vessels seem to run into whales.

We hit one off the coast of NCal several years ago motoring. Gentle, speed bump kind of experience. I guess it was sleeping (?)

This time Ishmael Didn't Return

At least this couple lived through their experience, and in apparently good spirits after bobbing about in that cold water.

I, on the other hand, was at the helm of the Pequod when that white monster rammed us and so went down with the ship. Only Ishmael survived to tell the story. Ahab got what was coming to him, a victim of his own plan for vengeance.

And some of you thought I moved to Seattle and opened a coffee shop…

Whales? Yes, but what a politically correct beating for Mark who was attempting a little sarcasm and humor! And, how could I not believe that all the men who joined in the castigation get up every morning and are maniacally obssessed by one thought: I just can't wait to do the dishes, Honey. I'm really feeling empty. Did we have some left over from last night? Good luck and good sailing, Ron P.S. I must share a little secret . . . my wife does the dishes in my house.

I don't mind a little smacking, even a gentle whipping... when she's finished the chores.

Now can we get back to whales...

Now, thats a whale spanking!

How appalling. How can you even admit such a thing in public. You should be ashamed.

Personally I do the dishes at our house,

at least once a month.

I need a woman.
I feel this way when the dishes/laundry/varnishing/ oil changing/bottom cleaning and the other female chores pile up but then I remember all the women who've come and gone thru that revolving door, and I remember:

Well after all, Pickering, I'm an ordinary man,
Who desires nothing more than an ordinary chance,
to live exactly as he likes, and do precisely what he wants...
An average man am I, of no eccentric whim,
Who likes to live his life, free of strife,
doing whatever he thinks is best, for him,
Well... just an ordinary man...
BUT, Let a woman in your life and your serenity is through,
she'll redecorate your home, from the cellar to the dome,
and then go on to the enthralling fun of overhauling you...
Let a woman in your life, and you're up against a wall,
make a plan and you will find,
that she has something else in mind,
and so rather than do either you do something else
that neither likes at all You want to talk of Keats and Milton,
she only wants to talk of love,
You go to see a play or ballet, and spend it searching
for her glove, Let a woman in your life
and you invite eternal strife,
Let them buy their wedding bands for those anxious little hands...
I'd be equally as willing for a dentist to be drilling
than to ever let a woman in my life, I'm a very gentle man,
even tempered and good natured
who you never hear complain,
Who has the milk of human kindness
by the quart in every vein,
A patient man am I, down to my fingertips,
the sort who never could, ever would,
let an insulting remark escape his lips
Very gentle man...
But, Let a woman in your life,
and patience hasn't got a chance,
she will beg you for advice, your reply will be concise,
and she will listen very nicely, and then go out
and do exactly what she wants!!!
You are a man of grace and polish,
who never spoke above a hush,
all at once you're using language that would make
a sailor blush, Let a woman in your life,
and you're plunging in a knife,
Let the others of my sex, tie the knot around their necks,
I prefer a new edition of the Spanish Inquisition
than to ever let a woman in my life I'm a quiet living man,
who prefers to spend the evening in the silence of his room,
who likes an atmosphere as restful as
an undiscovered tomb,
A pensive man am I, of philosophical joys,
who likes to meditate, contemplate,
far from humanities mad inhuman noise,
Quiet living man....
But, let a woman in your life, and your sabbatical is through,
in a line that never ends comes an army of her friends,
come to jabber and to chatter
and to tell her what the matter is with YOU!,
she'll have a booming boisterous family,
who will descend on you en mass,
she'll have a large wagnarian mother,
with a voice that shatters glass,
Let a woman in your life,
Let a woman in your life,
Let a woman in your life [?]
I shall never let a woman in my life.

Re: Humpback Sinks Sailboat

Should probably be in joke thread.

New husband and wife go to honeymoon suite, and prepare for love fest.

They undress and before hanging tux, he says to her," Honey, just for fun, try on my tux pants"
She replies" Don't be silly, I cant fill those"
To which he replies " --and just remember that!"

She smiles, and throws him her panties, and says," Let me see you wear these"
He says, very macho," I can't get into those"

And she says," AND YOU WON'T, until you change your attitude!!"

BTW, a whale of no tail

Humpbacks don't hear boats so well

According to this report, the humpback whale population is increasing in SE Alaska. Also, according to National Park Service wildlife biologist Janet Neilson
“A lot of people are under the perception that humpback whales and other baleen whales can detect vessels on the water through echo-location or sonar, but baleen whales do not have the ability to echo-locate like toothed whales. So they’re often relying on passive hearing and they do have a difficult time detecting fast-moving vessels because they did not evolve in an environment with fast-moving underwater sound. So it’s difficult for them to locate the sound. So the best thing to do is slow down and keep a sharp lookout.”

"Boaters hitting more whales in Southeast": KFSK - Public Radio in Petersburg, Alaska - Local News

Sailboats aren't generally going to be a fast moving sound, at least relative to powerboats. However, sailboats will usually be a much lower level of sound which might be just as tough for the whales to pinpoint.

Re: Humpback Sinks Sailboat

My only experience with a whale was the Matriarch Orca for J Pod that suddenly appeared and broached not 30' off of Oh Joy's stern as we sat with slack sails. Nothing quite gets your attention like a 35' Orca catching air close enough to splash you from outta nowhere....
