pirate Gibraltar

Bad news for folks used to relying on Gib to restart their 18mths by popping into Gib for a weekend of shopping etc..
New Deal agreed by UK-Spain puts Gibraltar into the Schengen Zone so Tangier and other N African countries along with Turkey are now the main countries along with a rapidly diminishing number of countries in the N Med..

Re: Gibraltar

Two links to articles on Gibraltar and Schengen: https://www.breitbart.com/europe/202...s-brexit-deal/ and https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...st-brexit-deal . What's been published is confusing and contentious about the details still. It appears the UK are adamant they retain sovereignty but there's no denial about imposition of Schengen rules.

Ahem

Schengen countries and the EU are different

Gibraltar followed the UK out of the EU , hence visiting with your yacht will reset the “ VAT “ clock , what it won’t do is allow the crew to discount the days in Gib from there allowed 90 days in the Schengen area.( and duty free etc will apply )

On the other hand , a part of the UK remains in the customs union , visiting it would not stop the EU vat clock

At this point , the uk has territories inside the custom union , but outside Schengen , inside Schengen but outside the customs union and also outside both Schengen and the customs union , and territories within the UK VAT regime and outside it

And that’s before it has Scotland to deal with

Re: Gibraltar

As far as I read about this, the port and airport are not Schengen and will have FRONTEX controls towards the rest of Gibraltar.

FRONTEX will do the controls because the Brits would not allow Spain to do it.
There will need to be further discussion on this, because ultimately it's Spains duty to control its outside borders unless the EU decides generally to have a common border control throughout.
As UK and Gibraltar are no more part of the EU, they can not control outer borders of the EU.

Not sure if there are supermarkets and the like in the port.

Frontex gets bigger and bigger 1000 staff and 350 million budget this year !

They can’t be too far away from a fleet of branded cutters , no doubt us yachties will get to know them better and better

Opps...

Starting next year, Frontex will deploy three off-shore patrol vessels (OPVs) from Finland, Romania and France, which will have multi-national European crews for the first time. Currently, member states provide vessels, along with their own crews, to participate in Frontex joint operations.

“This marks a tangible step in our transformation into the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. This solution will allow us to be more effective when assisting member states at the EU’s external maritime borders,” said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri.

To paraphrase that well used US phrase , “ nothing is more scarier then an European Agency that’s here to “ assist “

Re: Gibraltar

Actually I'm all for a closer knit European Union and that includes joint border patrol and coast guard with common structure in all member states.
If we have freedom of movement inside we should control our borders with common rules.
Though we may need to get majority decisions instead of unanimous agreements to get that really working.
