Fire destroyed the main building and John's Pavilion at the Deltaville Maritime Museum in Deltaville yesterday (July 19), right in the middle of
Family Boatbuilding Week at the museum.
Several people were working on their
project boats beneath John's Pavilion just hours before the fire started in that vicinity around 6 p.m. The fire then spread to the roof of the main building. The pavilion and the
project boats were completely destroyed, as were historic boats which were on exhibit.
As many as 60 firemen battled the fire for hours to get the flames under control and keep it from spreading to the other buildings. The four main display rooms in the main building were destroyed, but some of the artifacts were salvaged. No injuries were reported.
