Current Conditions on the Intracoastal Waterway

I am hoping to get any info on intercoastal issues due to the hurricane. I know that the Dismal Swamp is a mess, but had heard a few negative things about the conditions between Norfolk and Charleston. Is there anyone that has gone down recently between these two destinations that could offer first hand observations? We are planning on moving south at the end of September. Many thanks in advance for your info.

Could it be that no members of Cruisers Forum have been on the intercoastal in this huge area in over a month? WOW

The starting gun for the race south doesn't start untill the end of the boat show">annapolis boat show, which is in Oct. Check Claborne Youngs" Salty Southeast Cruisors" web site for all your ICW info needs. Have a good trip

I just went to that website and did not see any updates since 2010. That could be good news, but doesn't sound right.

Re: Current Conditions on the Intracoastal Waterway

hello waterwordly, we were there last week, october 23ish just before the storm, just keep to the middle and you are fine. use local knowledge, that is your best bet at this point. we are held up in Oriental, NC in a really good hole. hopefully we can start south again tomorrow, wednesday october 31. the storm here drowned the docks, then the wind came, but no severe damage on land, and all boats here were safe. good luck

Re: Current Conditions on the Intracoastal Waterway

Wow this is a old thread. I took my boat from Annapolis to Beaufort NC on the inside early November due to the Noreaster blowing like stink. We went back last week and went outside to Charleston. Offshore is the way to go. Cuts off 75 miles, no bridges, narrow channels etc... Plus you get to sail!

We are really late heading south but just finished installing a diesel hydronic heating system so we will be ok with the cold. How hard is it to find water and fuel along the waterway this late?

Re: Current Conditions on the Intracoastal Waterway

No problem at all. You will be surprised at how many people are still in the NJ-NC portion of the trip. A buddy went through the lock at Great Bridge yesterday morning with 12 boats! Plenty of fuel and water stops every 50 miles or so.
