And have I ever mentioned here how much I dislike voice recognition?
Even though VR clobbered my sentence above, I think you get the message.

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

There is a thread here named "Courtesy when giving way".
I think the 2 captains need to read it.

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

The important question here being: which one was bigger and had right of way?

Viewing the video that would appear to be an allision, not a collision

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

Glory had the Legend on her starboard side and was thus the give way vessel under Rule 15. The video sure seems to show that she "gave way", so no fault, nothing to see here.

Nice word Stu - learning something new every day. Wonder if there are any ALLREGS?

The pilot is at fault but the Captain has ultimate responsibility.

Ship on left was docked. Pretty sure she had right of way though not sure what rule.

Thia video shows a slightly greater angle. Watch prop wash closely - he's swinging stern into bow of ship astern. What's not clear is why - can't see bow of ship on right to see why he is steering the way he is.

The Carnival Glory hit the docked Carnival Legend in Cozumel, Mexico. One passenger was injured.

Yes. Hence my poor attempt at humor. The moving vessel is certainly the one responsible for keeping clear.

When I fist saw this vid this morning, viewing angle was zoomed and I thought vessel on left was underway. I didn't realize she was docked. I'm sure wind played a role here. As a guy who used to shoe-horn boats for boat shows, this is a nightmare scenario that was always in the back of my mind, granted on a much smaller scale.

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

Bit of a non event.... Carnival Glory swinging into her berth ... breeze freshens... leeway increases..

You can see where she was when they struck... close east of that red 'wine glass' .. her ais ant is on her bridge... lot of ship sticking out behind it... these ships have massive windage and I suspect there are no tugs in this port.

So she goes around again... spins... backs up... all fast F&A.... RFWE... nothing more to see here.... move along.. move along...

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

Yeah but did the docked ship have a proper watch with the correct day shapes displayed?

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

In one video it looked like a couple people fell into the water. I did not see any reports saying that but it sure looked like one or two persons falling from an upper aft deck into the water.

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

What's absolutely striking to me is that the captain of the vessel doing the colliding completely failed to sound the horn to warn his passengers of a pending collision as well as the passengers on the other boat of imminent danger. If I were anywhere near the windows of the deck that got hit...I'd be pretty pissed there was absolute no warning whatsoever.

Re: Cruise ships collide in Cozumel

According to news reports the crew did warn passengers to evacuate that part of the ship before the collision. They have lots of internal PA capacity which you may not hear outside the ship. No doubt the two bridges were in communication so no real need to sound horns. That would just add to the confusion I think.
