Catamaran disabled, Crew rescued

The 50' catamaran Moondance was disabled off Cape Hatteras and 2 crew were injured by a wave.

Those Coasties in Elizabeth City get a lot of action! I was wondering if the Gulf Stream was a factor in the boat's problems, and took a look. The Stream is as far offshore right now as I've ever seen it--maybe 200 miles--so they weren't affected by it at 40 miles offshore. They must have been hit hard by that cold front that moved off the coast on Monday.

I think we are in for a rash of boats abandoned. Even here on the forum we read I WANT TO SAIL AROUND THE WORLD, with no clue of stern, or stem. Let alone the ability to read water. Some people are thinking they can be a CEO on the first day.

You have got to learn to sweep the floor, before you can run a business. & being in command of a vessel no matter what the size is a full time job. The only good thing I can see of this. Is that there will be more fire sales on boats. Maybe Therapy & Ireany need to get in touch with the cat owners?

Unfortunately I couldn't agree more.

Blame GPS, particularly gps chartplotters. No need for any ability to navigate in the traditional sense. Just follow the yellow brick road.

Heard over ch 16. "mayday, mayday, mayday". CG response, "what's the emergency"? Answer, "our gps chartplotter died and we are lost". Long story short after a few back and forths the CG determined that the boat was in Long Island sound a few miles from the boats marina and the boaters had not a clue on how to navigate back.
A true and very sad tale. There will be more and more.

The rescue boat crew towed the Moondance and its crew to the station.

Dang!! Not still floating to pick up.

“The sailing vessel crew was taken in like family, warmed up, and received a hot meal from the station’s galley staff,” said Chief Petty Officer Erik Watson, executive petty offcier of Station Hatteras Inlet. “Station crewmembers took the two injured personnel to Hatteras Medical Center, where they received treatment for their injuries, and subsequently released.”

Aww....aint that sweet.

I would be so embarrassed, but would probably eat too...........

Maybe I should get an inflatable and an open plane ticket and watch the news..........then find it and claim it.............hmmm.

That “swaying side to side” Hud is a dangerous event on a boat as all nautical reporters have been trained to recognize.

Soon to be followed by the more technical up and down cork-screw which is usually the harbinger of the involuntary expressions of “RALPH!”
