Capsize

Tradgedy unfolding in the Whitsundays.
See.....Search continues for yacht woman | Mackay News | Local News in Mackay | Mackay Daily Mercury

Any one know what design of sailing catamaran Rapture is? Or indeed is it a sailing vessel?

Regards

Re: Capsize

Fishing Charter Boat as I understand, not a sailing cat.

probably this one

Rapture Sport Fishing Charters

Hamilton Island sport fishing charters in the Whitsunday Islands
Beginners to experienced anglers, try your hand at our style of fishing the Whitsunday waters, from bottom fishing with hand lines for the Coral Trout, to live baiting with rods for the Spanish Mackerel and Giant Trevally. Included in this tour are non-alcoholic beverages as well as all bait and equipment.

Share your catch with family and friends or enjoy it all to yourself. Rapture Sport Fishing can arrange for your prize catch to be prepared to your liking by the chefs at selected restaurants on Hamilton Island.
Indeed there are a few clues in the story (1) not too many 30 foot charter sailing cats in the Whitsundays. (2) not too many companies would let 12 charters on 30 foot sailing charter. The fine people from the Mackay Mercury may not be the best source of forensic detail.

It would be nice if we didn't jump to conclusions on these matters

Re: Capsize

Well I hate to bust your bubble but there is a 30 foot or so sailing cat - kind of like a big hobie - that takes tourists for rides out of Hamilton Island. From what I've seen of it on the water it holds about that many people. I'm not saying that was the boat involved in the incident, but a boat meeting that description exists.

Yes, reports are very sketchy at the moment. The age of the missing woman varies between reports as does other details such as the length, type and max wind-speed. Some quote the LOA at 10 meters. Could it be a Seawind 1000?
The vessel is reported attached , inverted, to a mooring a present, so I suspect a picture will eventually emerge.

Regards

Re: Capsize

Doesn't look like a sailing boat to me. Certainly not one of australia's most successful sailing boats.

Anyway, the lady in question has been found deceased, very tragic, and in QLD catty we pay the state coroner to enquire into what happens in these sorts of matters. I will probably not draw too many conclusions till I see what the Office of State Coroner has to say.

Maybe I'm the idiot here but how do you come up with the Seawind 1000 when the boat was described as a fishing charter boat?

In Catty's defence earlier reports described the boat in varying degrees from "yacht" to "sports catamaran". It's only today that the details of the actual vessel have come to light.

Its only today about 6 hours ago that Catty posted? Thus the information I had - he had - or at least could have had if he had looked.

Its why I think its prudent to wait a minute or two, firstly out of human decency while a search is underway and human compassion when a body is found, and then to allow for some stronger info to come out. Having said that, in about 30 seconds of research it was clear that it was "likely" to be the fishing boat pictured above. What catty may not appreciate is that regional papers don't have reporters on the ground all over the place, they usually rely on the Police Media feed, and indeed if you look at the first story its the media release with "colour" thrown in.

If you'd read on a bit would have seen (from the same first post):-

And is that really even a catamaran? Only has one bow - appears to me to be more of a cathedral hull (like a dorey).

But if it is a Cat (or a Tri?), given what I have "learned" about Catamarans from the CF sub-forum over recent years, my money is on the passengers all being mono sailors who jumped overboard simply to give catamarans a bad name. and the boat is not upturned - any pics of that will have been photoshopped.

I read the article in the link and watched the video. Is it just me or did neither one mention catamaran at all? BOB

Re: Capsize

Pick, pick, pick! C'mon, guys! Someone hears an upsetting story, and knows that all the initial media stories will be flawed.

So he or she asks to see what others have heard. What IS the big deal here???
