Britain to Sort out Somalia in 2012!
Well, according to David Cameron (English PM) .
"The Prime Minister's decision to tackle the Somalia quagmire is seen by some as being fuelled by the success of the Libyan venture"
Britain's new year resolution: intervene in Somalia - Africa - World - The Independent
Good luck with that one ............but even if (yet another) failed war, might be a side benefit to folks wanting to pass through the area by boat more safely.
But my bet is all words and no action (and no money!) and simply part of his recent (Dog Whistle) announcement that all Muslims, Jews and non-beleivers are to be driven into the sea from whence they came......all in the name of cheeses (like in the good old days ).
"the UK is a Christian country and we should not be afraid to say so"
BBC News - David Cameron on Christianity - views
Seems to not realise that only a minority of people in Britain are practising Christians and over half of the population sees itself as non-religious (as per the latest British Social Attitudes survey).....it's why we have stuff like electricity. and don't burn people on bonfires anymore.
Politics and religion - and with a hint of guns

Re: Britain to sort out Somalia in 2012!
No problem, another country getting western style democracy whether they want it or not. Another place that will become desirable for independent travellers like us, just like Afganistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Lybia and Afganistan. I suspect that within 3 years the Somali coastline will be littered with spotless marinas with all the bells and whistles. At least there will be plenty of workers with some "maritime experience"

Re: Britain to sort out Somalia in 2012!
You are welcome to discuss the implications of the British PM's decision to take on the problem of Somalia as it pertains to cruisers however this is not the place to discuss religion nor is the place to discuss politics except as they apply to the topic. Please, keep to the waterways and refrain from wandering down the garden path.
Thanks.

Re: Britain to sort out Somalia in 2012!
having met many somali's in africa and in exile in other parts of the world, half the london bus drivers are somali!,i've allways found them generous, hospitable people.
their country is like a giant gravelpit with little water and few natural resources, the eastern coast line that streches 1500 miles is a very long beach, with mogadishio its only natural harbour and hafun,700 miles away the only viable anchorage, little wonder piracy prevails.
i for one would be one of the first to visit the north with a coast line of about 300 miles and about 4 natural harbours and 4 or 6 safe weather anchorages.
so good on you mr cameroon it's about time some one put deeds above words, and brought peace and stability to the region,......and who knows there might even be oil and minerals to pay for it all..............

There must be some sort of incentive other than being idealistic as idealisum is not what motivates most Politicos to do the right thing...the location is stratigic for sure...at least it should become a safer place for sailors and their vessels...DVC

This was a 1st, got a warning that this is a hot topic and needed to "agree" to be nice.
All I was going to post was the Russian Navy doesn't share our "catch and release" policy for Somalia pirates. The below link shows the rather harsh way the Russian Navy is dealing with the pirates, so caution if you have a weak stomach.

It would be nice to see anyone doing something about fixing the problems in the area.

It would seem very strategic but not enough for them to care I guess. I believe in the north they have oil and some semblance of gov't.
Safe would be good.

A few more countrys doing this and you would soon have no Pirates any where.
They only do it now (piracy) because they can and do get away with it,

Maybe, maybe not. Had there been any survivors among the pirates that managed to get back to land and give a first hand account as to what happened to them, maybe so. But since a lot of pirates are lost a sea, others would just assume weather and poor seamanship. Could try mass distribution of Kindles programmed to only run the above video, to the villages that the pirates hail from. Just a thought.
