'Big Spirit' Dropped in Boatyard

Big Spirit Adventures

At midday on Monday 19th September there was an incident when Big Spirit was being lifted for her annual anti fouling prior to another Atlantic season. The result is she ended up falling and breaking her back when she fell onto the concrete, thankfully there were no injuries when 45 tonnes came crashing down. We are working with the boat yard, insurers and legal people to understand how we move forward. All guests with current bookings have been contacted and offered alternative places on trips or full refunds. As soon as we know what the next steps are we will keep everyone posted. Many thanks from all us at Big Spirit for the messages of help and support we have already received.

Re: big spirit dropped in the boatyard

My sympathies to you and all. My heart is always thumping when the lift commences, I do like to be there, just in case. Hope it was a reputable lifting company, that should help.

What a disaster! At least no one was injured and it seems the company will move forward.

Re: big spirit dropped in the boatyard

Was the boat lifted out of the water with a crane or with a travel lift? I have seen many boats "dropped" by cranes. Here is another Utube of crane problems: http://youtu.be/ek3pRQ7gp5w
And another: http://youtu.be/hTEWQWA99-8

When in doubt....(you)tie the slings together......unless there was a strap or shackle failure

Re: big spirit dropped in the boatyard

Ouch.

No doubt your yard contract has something specifically worded to cover this...but the US car rental industry (as you are in charter, that's similar) has long made a habit of saying that if you put the car out of service, you are not only liable for the repairs, but also for the loss of income from it being out of use.

In other words, you will now lose your income due to cancelling charters. The yard should be liable for that loss of income, since it really does come down to their fault, as they broke your boat.

Unless you've got some specific laws otherwise?

Re: big spirit dropped in the boatyard
