A View On International Travel
Hi,
Just was reading the paper and saw this in a column... Thought it was a well expressed viewpoint that is valid in many places that cruisers travel.
Quote:
The past couple of years, U.S. travelers have been connecting the dots in Mexico. They're just not paying attention to how long the lines are between dots.
If there are gunmen in Tijuana, we're not visiting Chetumal. Never mind that the two cities are farther apart than San Francisco and Nashville.
News about daylight gunbattles among drug gangs in Acapulco makes us cancel a trip to colonial Merida. Never mind that they're in different states, have different cultures and are, practically, different worlds. It's exactly the same as not going to New Orleans because tourists were attacked in New York. It's a big country.

Re: a view on international travel...
I have found that the point is valid not just in comparing violence in one city to another but even in different parts of the same city, both in the US or overseas.
Plenty of cities that are safe unless you stray into the wrong neighborhood. Just because someone got mugged at 4 am in the back side of the French Quarter doesn't mean it's not safe to go to a restarurant on Bourbon Street for dinner.

Yep. That's been my observation from living overseas for a decade. Americans in particular have a difficult time placing risk in perspective.

The current US govt. advice for US citizens is to avoid travel to the UK. Yes, the UK : the country where you have 10% of the chance of being shot, compared to the US. Why? Chance of terrorism. When did we become so risk averse?

The per capita probability of being killed by a firearm, in the UK, is about 10% of that in the US.
The per capita probability of being murdered by other means is about the same.
Rather a telling argument for gun control, isn't it?

Give me Mulege on Bahia de Concepcion any time, the sleepy Mexico where the desert meets the sea. Since it is a bay within a bay, waters as clear as Lake Tahoe with numerous shore side hot springs that us cruisers have built into thermal baths. Every anchorage is a great anchorage.

You're giving away one of my favorite secret spots.
Let's talk more about gun violence.

No I didn't think so either so had a look on here:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_1052.html
and couldn't find anything. However, there is a risk of being mugged, notably by the state tax collectors

Re: A View On International Travel.
:O))) Who would know? Hard to tell which papers there are the serious ones and which are .... similar to tabloids here.
Is it the papers that DO or do not have the second page girl?
