Got to agree here. When it comes to online purchases we all need to go in being real skeptics. It’s the Wild West out there and we each need to protect our selves.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

The other day while strolling with my wife through Rota, Spain, we saw a sign outside one bar that read: (Special Of The Day. Pay double for your first Cruscampo, and get your second one free). I have been wondering just how many asked for the SPECIAL OF THE DAY.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

I have bought and sold a number of items on CF and eBay. I always check to see how long the other party has been a member of the group and so far have had no problems.

Might want to propose a better scammer determinative indicator.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

If I were a scammer and the system began flagging me for posting for more than one item in a short amount of time then I’d simply create multiple accounts.

My point is that this would be an enormous task for CF to try and tackle.

We should all expect that the other party is scamming whenever making an online person to person trade.

I feel your pain. A simple misunderstanding results in a rush to judgement.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

Only one poster got it right... escrow.

There's a great service which I used to transfer a boat on a private sale and I hope I'm allowed: it's escrow dot com. For example your $400 purchase would cost $13. It's all done online, and you have 100% assurance you won't be screwed. No money changes hands until you get what you expected.

In my case there was no broker (who I trust less than an escrow agent anyway). I tried to get the seller to agree to using a well known local broker, but no soap. Good luck next time. I hate arguing with CC companies or PP - too much time, trouble and no guarantees. No crook will agree to it.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

Lesson I learned this year is to never do anything with PayPal or eBay. After calling them and spending 30 minutes to get to a real person they just basically blew me off. So I just disputed the charge with my credit card company and let them take care of it, which they did promptly.

Re: WARNING- SCAMMER ON FORUMS

No way to get help from the police?

Any hope giving the spammer's details to PayPal could help then block this type of scam?

Don't know if either of you reported that he was back to the moderators, but I just did. That's the only way we'll make it too much trouble for them, and they'll move on to some other site.

I just received this msg from the same busy scammer:

From Jerfbanks

Hello, Email Dana danaslovesneals at gmail dot com He has a AIS650B Transceiver up for sale two weeks ago. It might still be available.

I questioned it immediately after searching for any similar item by such person in the Classifieds, seeing none, seeing that they only joined in August 2020 and were suggesting contacting a gmail address, not a forum member, and also with no posts and no referrals.

Clearly a scammer to be avoided.
