The Cruisers Daily popup

I'm seeing the "Cruisers Daily" popup, again.

Everytime I login from a desktop browser, and in an infinite loop when I try to login from a mobile browser.

Do we really need this?

I'm past hoping that someone is ever going to try to fix it.

Re: The Cruisers Daily popup

Hello, Jedge,

It does not happen for me. Windows 10 here, a tablet hybrid laptop. I run Adblock Plus, too.

Other people who have the problem you describe have run the source down to something in your own settings. Maybe one of them will come along soon, and help. It will help them to know exactly what you are using, 'cause everyone manages to solve the problem, but the browsers are different, and how you get to the settings is also different.

Help, please, someone? Thanks in advance.

Ann

Same happened to me just the other day. Endless loop w/no quick way to hit the "X". Ended up shutting down the browser. IIRC, it happened the last time(quite a while back) that I saw the pop up.
Amazon Fire kindle reader tablet in use; but same happened a coup!me yr ago with Motorola droid max and TV screen lash-up, so........ Begs the ?? about platform and software, doesn't it?

Try clearing your cookies, quit and restart your browser, and then make sure your browser is set to accept cookies... it's most likely a cookie that checks if the popup has been displayed, and if that cookie isn't set then the popup will keep displaying.

That's simply backwards.
There have been complaints about this widget for as long as I've been on this site, and I've had issues myself every year or so.
And no, asking the user to clear cookies, etc., is not a reasonable answer.

The widget needs to be fixed or it needs to be removed.

I have no control over anything here (or anywhere else), simply offering something you could try on your end to help.

Re: The Cruisers Daily popup

I have experienced this annoying and totally unecessary popup in its infinite loop.
I have complained to the website administrators who have offered suggestions - none of which work.
The only solution I have found is to open the browser, login to cruisers with login and password, then open the email and use hyperlinks to read the articles.
This appears to work for me.
Of course you have to retain the login in a separate browser window.
However - administrators - why don't you get rid of this popup feature altogether.
I would be much happier

The only way I can avoid that pain in the butt pop up is to use my phone.. but then I don't get my Comic Sans and I've been told.. my site link in my signature does not appear when I post.
So I pay for the annoyance with my link or.. pay for neither..

Re: The Cruisers Daily popup

It's a CSS element. It's up there with auto-play video and pop-up adverts with regards to awful design ideas. There are a great many ways to accidentally design or write code that will annoy your users. Doing it on purpose is a whole different level of arrogance.

Add these two lines to any tool that uses Adblock-Plus syntax (UBlock Origin is my current favorite; and 1-Blocker on IOS). It will go away.

The widget needs to be fixed or it needs to be removed.

This widget and many more site functions use cookies to "remember' how to behave. Cookies are used to keep you logged in at page changes, remember your subscription preferences etc. Sometimes local cookies become corrupted or a user simply blocks cookie exchange and this breaks some or all of these function.

On a PC: clear your cookies and cache and then enable cookie exchange with this site. You will see the popup once more but when you dismiss it that should be the last time for a long while.

On a tablet or mobile device - do a restart.

If you are running the mobile app uninstall it, do a restart and then reload from the app store.

All of that is simply nonsense.

I've loaded thousands of pages that relied on cookies to keep track of what they've displayed. None of them show this behavior.

There's a race condition, in there, somewhere. It's looking for cookies too early, and not seeing that they've already been set, or moving on to the next page before they've been properly set.

The widget is broken.

No offense intended, but if the "widget is broken", why is not this problem happening for others? You might try installing AdBlock. I have, and I do not have the problem.

Can anyone out there help JEdge?
