Open CPN on Apple iPad

I purchased a new iPad to use Open cpn on our boat. Unfortunately I am unable to download and install Open cpn on the iPad. Can anyone help with this issue?

OCPN doesn´t work on iPad only on Android.

Actually, OpenCPN works on MANY operating systems, but not iWhatsIts. And if you're going to be working with satellite imagery (KAPs or mbTiles) to augment your charts, then you probably want to run it on a real computer anyway.

From the OpenCPN web site Download Directory: "OpenCPN is free, open source software for marine navigation. It is available for Mac OSX, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, BSDs and Solaris." I suppose Mac OS is not the same as on an ipad. What a shame, hello Aqua Maps!

OpenCPN won't work on iPad. Numerous previous threads have explained this and the reason.

It DOES work well on Android, and Android tablets are not pricey.

Thank you , yes I did read after I posted ...

I am still having problems in downloading on my laptop , just downloading the latest OS hopefully that will work as I have read some has succeeded at the moment it is not letting me saying that it does not recognise the developer and could be malware

Yes, Rigger, this is "normal" when you try to run ANY software downloaded from anywhere but a major SW supplier. PITA, but it is what it is.

In the blue box that comes up warning you about unknown SW, there's a More info... link. Click that & a [Run Anyway] button appears at the bottom of that dialog. Click on that & the install should start.

Good luck!

These last instructions apply to Windows 10 and newer, not macOS, but the logic is exactly the samev- you have to say you know what you are doing when opening software not signed by Apple/Microsoft, which is something that costs both money and time and we currently can't afford and are not willing to do.

For MacOS, open System Preferences, then select "Security & Privacy". If you received the "unidentified developer" warning within the past hour, then in the bottom half of the "General" tab you should see an "Open Anyway" option.

You'll likely have to confirm one last time, but that should get you up and running.

I recommend you get iSailor instead.

Re: Open CPN on Apple iPad

If you have another computer onboard, you can run VNC from the iPad and access OpenCPN on another machine. I did this last season from an old iPad 1 with OpenCPN running on a Raspberry Pi at the Nav station.

if you do go down the Android pad route, consider an Samsung Active Pro. 10.1", bright screen (for sunlight use), waterproof

I run VNC on mine to access the Mac Mini running OpenCPN, which is the main nav computer on board. Works well enough. For “iPad-only” work, I use both iNavX and Time Zero.

The so called Gatekeeper function have been introduced by Apple several years ago and obviously Microsoft has doing the same now. It is not to make money for the companies as someone guessed but to warn the user installing possibly malware which may result in an instable working OS. Also it is not the OS company signing such software but the developer of the software. So in case something goes wrong it is well known and certified who produced this software. The fee developers has to pay is not introduced for the signing procedure but has been to be payed long before that to get all the help and informations from the OS company.
The success of Apple as one of the richest companies results of such decisions to get a secure OS.

Have a look at this thread on using OpenCPN as the main navigational system and shadowing it using an iPad at the wheel station.

At this time this only works with iNavX on the iPad/iPhone.
