If you are in the States check out Good Old Boat.

Regional magazines, Southwinds, Lat 38, Telltails, and the like will give you some good local information. Sail, CW, Sailing, Blue Water Cruising, Ocean Navigator will all provide useful information just be prepared for the day they start repeating themselves. I believe that the CCA has a magazine where current cruisers discuss cruising issues but I haven't joined yet.

It would be interresting to collect a list of all of the magazines the forum members read and put together a poll on them.

Pura Vida, not a bad idea, but there are as many different tastes as there are sailors. That would be quite a list. Have to agree on Good Old Boat. It has two characteristics that stand heads up above the rest. One, it caters to those in smaller boats, not the over 50' crowd, and two, it not only supports, but provides information on doing it youself. It is catering to the reader who goes for the self service yard, not the $300,000 refit guys.
Mudnut, Latts and Atts is just Bob doing what "EasyRiders" did to his earlier rags. No fault in that I suppose, but Bike rags gave him the chance to live that life the way he wanted, now it's sailing rags. Aside from that, I agree with you 100% I would list my bikes, but I would have to start another forum. Suffice it to say, everything from an old 1936 pocket valve to a 91 FX, and the only two I haven't owned are a knuckle and a K model. Lots of sportster stories, but I will stick with my FL's. Flat heads and wood boats rule

A recent posting in Latts &atts suggested we report all cruisers, who are seen going off the beaten path, to big brother. Sounds like they got the goods on Bob Bitchin and he has become their little puppy dog and mouhpiece . Some rebel!! Where'd ya get the brown nose , Bob?

So I went to Latts& Atts after reading everything here and what a disappointment. For me a successful forum is a busy forum. I find their forum to be slow in traffic (few new threads in a single day). It is also crash prone, something that puts the damper on successful forums. Its been down for the past 24 hours for example.

I don't mind their mag having a bit of an attitude; I explain to my friends it is a bit like Mad magazine meets yachting mag. If you have seen the movie Mr & Mrs Smith with jolie/pitt, one of the more humerous scenes for me is where he is kicking her behind a sofa; of course the scene is incredibly "politically incorrect" and that is its humour. You just know that every time Atts & latts puts a busty gal in a bikini on the front cover; they get letters of protest, which of course only encourages them... lol.

When I started this thread I wasn't trying to put crap on latts&atts,and I can not believe how much hostility has been directed towards them!!There are good sections at their web site and one-sided sections also,so what is all this site rivelry that exsists about?I know that Cruisers forum is deffinately one of the best sites for down to earth sailing info and collective opinions ,so should the forum members,and with this in-mind,I request that this thread be blocked or stopped or something.I know you people collectively,have more to offer than cheap rebutle of some other site!!!!I like some of the things on Renergade,sailfar,and a few others.Some things on all those sites are not pertinant"Is that the word?"To me,so I pick and choose what I feel is.If we have the best forum,and we do!!,Why waste our time picking and bitching about the others.Somone show some class and kill this thread befor it starts looking like the others.Mudnut.

At one point the Lattitudes and Attitudes BB had some fairly good information. Unfortunately, due to the influence of a few very objectionable characters--the Board rapidly devolved into an endless repitoir of political horse manuer having little to do with boating.

That, plus a few people that felt compelled to lace posts obscenities and/or post pornography, made it untenable.

Fortunately here we have, thus far, avoided that and I for one have learned a great deal and been greatly aided by suggestions and observations by others here that have more knowledge and expertise than I in many areas--for example, the installation of my electric windlass which I would not have undertaken absent the help I was given here.

Reasonable people can disagree without being disagreeable, or worse. Differing viewpoints and perspectives can add a valuable dimention to one's thinking and problem solving efforts if one is willing to listen to others' rationale.

As for the merit or lack thereof for Latt's n Att's. Having met Bob and Jody and several of the crew they assembled to create their magazine I have found them all to be intelligent, personable, and hard-working with an identified market that they address. It may not be my cup of tea but they deserve accolades for serving the audience to whom they appeal quite well.

N'any case....it is my hope that this boad will not devolve as did the L&A BB.

I enjoyed the rag unti they started advocating sicking big brother on any cruiser who had the spirit of adventure to go off the beaten path. That's where I stopped having anything good to say about the rag. That's the last thing we need to advocate cruisers doing to each other.

I USED to be a fan of L&A but no longer... this board is much better. Much more sailing/cruising talk... I get the feeling that L&A is more of an armchair cruiser publication... they love their bikinis and party talk... which is all good and well but cruising doesn'tlook much like that in all reality.

I like Lats and Atts. My wife hates it, says its just a meat market. But if you look at the photos of the parties, theres a lot of well over 50 types, with white beards and greek fishing caps, stretching tropical print shirts to a 1:1 ratio with the scenery imprinted thereon. So whats the harm?

All the sailing boards appeal to some but not others. L & A is the same. If you can't stand the heat/bilge don't go there, don't feed the trolls, etc...
I like the board, have been to their parties, Bob and Jody are great people as well as their staff. Have only met them twice at the St Pete Boat show, and have been out of the US since then and still order their stuff, wear their hat everyday over here in the heat... The mag is great, and pics are even better. Enjoy your time on the planet, too many go away every day that never experienced the joy of sailing.

Lats & Atts is what it is, on the fringe. So most people love it or hate it. I enjoy the rag, and some of the articles, but the forums are a little racy.

It is more the magazine I was refering to... If you're offended by my comments, I'm amazed. I've never been told to 'be careful..." mainly because sailors are very opinionated people.
My wife and I both agree about the meat market covers, I know it increases sales but... there are more males in the sailing world and maybe the cover makes good company on a long singlehanded sail (JUST A JOKE, DO NOT FLAME ME FOR THIS!!!)
I quit going to the board for one main reason... power consumption. If I have to prioritize (based on power consumption, time, etc.) then I will pick this board.
With all this said, I really enjoy the pictures section of L&A, usually a very nice variety.
The armchair cruiser may have been a bit harsh but the laundry room was hot and stuffy and my connection really sucked.

I agree with you H.P. on the sleezy rag covers - they are such a cheesy, transparent, marketing ploy. Refer to smiling face regarding the "be careful" comment.

I think if they used professional, silicone, drag-boat/Harley Queen type models it would be sleazy. It would help soothe some ruffled feathers in my house, though, if they could stick to boats on the cover...at least...

Its a little tense sitting there reading Bubba Whartz and smiling while my better half is only glaring across at me smiling and she's just seeing the cover.

Doesnt help when I turn the magazine upside down to read the little sayings in the margins....then she REALLY wonders what I am interested in...
