Hurth HBW15-2R gearbox lubrication

Good morning all

I have a HBW15-2R gearbox installed in my 45 foot ketch.

This is coupled to a Mercedes 240D marinized motor.

I managed to find a manual for the Hurth gearbox which recommends Automatic Transmission Fluid as the lubricant. However, discussing this later with another sailor, who has a Volvo gearbox, he said that he was advised by Volvo to use 20W50 instead of ATF as the gearbox oil.

Is anyone aware of such a change by Hurth?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Hurth HBW15-2R gearbox lubrication

I’ve seen Hurth boxes with ATF labels and the same box with an SAE 30 label. When you call a hurth distributor they’ll typically say ATF.

Realistically it’s just not that important, the oil only ones the bearings and gears. I was using sae 30 but found that when cold it was too viscous for the first shift or two and engagement was delayed. After switching to ATF such a problem has never occurred again.

Thanks for the reply. After posting the question I found a Hurth distributor and indeed, he advised ATF.

I drained what oil there was and refilled with ATF. But I'm heading for tropical waters in April, so I will probably change the ATF before I leave to replace it with 20W40.

Fair winds and gentle seas.

Regards

Andrew
