Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

I've had the same experience as the OP a couple of times. Almost impossible to enter text in the message box. Windows and Android. When it happens I realize I have inadvertently opened a plain vanilla version of Chrome that I keep around for when I need that. Switching to my normal ad-blocked browser solves the problem.

Which says something - if everyone is running an ad blocker what is the point of the ads? Maybe a more subtle design would better serve the site? I'm guessing the answer is no, the powers that be have done the math, but it is interesting that most of the responses here are "run an ad blocker".

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

I'm using Chrome with Ad Block Plus. While reading the thread it indicated it had blocked 12 ads.

When I clicked to submit it indicates 2 blocks.

Frankly I've used chrome or a derivative and ad block plus, no html5 auto play, and occasionally noscript for years. When ever I see someone else's browser its like an entirely different and unpleasant Internet.

There’s an app? Why don’t they advertise it?

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

We've been over this in other recent threads. My answer is always the same: run ad and snooper blockers and your whole web experience will improve. Here on CF my blockers are stopping 7 background trackers and three ads.

It's important to remember that in most cases it's not CF's fault -- not directly anyway. The ads you're seeing are mostly being served up by various Google trackers. They give you ads the algorithms believe are most effective on you. So what you're seeing is dependent on what you've already told Google. This is why it's important to block not only the ads, but all the background trackers that virtually every site, including CF, uses.

I also use Tapatalk on my mobile device (iPad). It shows no ads for CF at all. Not sure if the CF app is as effective. Might very well be. I haven't tried it in a long time.

I am accessing using chrome on an android device.
Try a diferent browser and tun on pop up blockers.

At very least your anti virus software should be able to block them.

getadblock.com (no leading www required, though using it will still get you there).

Never see an ad you don't want to, any more, and even block stuff the page itself puts out (e.g. the facebook tagalongs that they seem to think important to me).

My son wrote it but sold it 5 years ago; it's still the largest-number-of-users blocking program available, free (if you want to make a contribution you can, but don't have to).

I would not be without it, regardless of who wrote it

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

If we accept the fact that someone has to pay to keep the CF lights on, perhaps if we all donated a small amount per year, there would be no need of adds.

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

I access CF on my Apple mobile devices using Safari, and no pop up ads. And I haven’t set any settings to specifically address ads. On my windows desktop, I use Chrome, and also no pop ups.

Yes, no such problems with Firefox. (Has built-in ad blocker, among other nice attributes.)

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

Firefox on a MacBook Air. No pop ups, just some unobtrusive ads in the right column, that often are related to some of the CF threads, like Ocean Planet. They never bother me. Some are interesting and some are entertaining, but mostly I just ignore them. Never any problems with posts.

Re: Contributing to CF has become unbearable

Thanks for all the feedback. I tweaked add settings to off
in chrome and cleared out a bunch of junk in settings/site settings/data stored and so far the experience is much improved.

I am using the mobile site accessed using chrome.

Thanks for the suggestions
