We're a St. Francis 50 Catamaran. We have the KZ marine Boom Furling system and a Sparcraft mast. For a variety of reasons, among which is a better ability to reef downwind, we will be changing the system to slab reefing. We are very interested in the Sparcraft Single line system.*

Certainly, there are a variety of opinions on Boom Furling but let's not go there. Also, comparisons between a 50' Cat and monohulls of any length probably won't be helpful.*

We seek advice based on knowledge and actual experience with Catamarans in our size range; in particular on the question of single vs. two line reefing.*

The layout of our Helm station, which is very protected, would make it easy to have the main halyard and the desired reefing line each on their own electric winches and in easy reach. As we are a sailing couple that never uses crew, ease of use and safety is a bit more important than the ability to pull in the leech line first in extreme downwind conditions.*

Nonetheless we are here for advice.

If I am ever going to get my wife to join me for a few years cruising then its most likely going to have to be on a catamaran. I've been looking around a bit to get familiar (Boat Trader) and using ChatGPT to do some compare and contrast, etc. I am a novice sailor who is completely hooked. I have several hundred hours experience at the helm from monohaul boat charters (Carribean, Med, PACNW) and love the feeling of being on the wind! I have crewed on a catamaran for a short trip between Marthas's Vinyard and Mantauk last summer, so I have a vague idea of what its like to cruise a cat.
I'm looking for advice from anyone on this forum who can recommend the right boat for my wife and I. The wife enjoys sailing but likes her sailing without drama and many comforts. We want something under $400,000. Used. Turnkey for cruising and bluewater sailing. A cat that is up to date and actually sails well - mostly single handed.

Thanks for any recommendations!
I chose the 35 KG (77lbs) size anchor as that fitted the recomened sizing graph.

Appreciate any ones thoughts on the S160 Spade anchor.

Hi,

we were several times for a number of days on mooring buoys without being onboard.

Every time we came back we found a huge knot between the boats anchor chain (attached to the top of the mooring buoys chain), the buoy chain and the bridle.

It's in non tidal waters with varying directions of wind and swell.

Due to this it's not really practical to use a stern anchor.

What solutions did you find to prevent this?

At anchor it's not a problem because the anchor swivel allows the chain to rotate.

I am getting tired of my work around.

Right now, and for years, I just stand in the dinghy and use the mechanical advantage of the block and tackle system on the davits to pull myself up with the dinghy at the same time.

this takes a lot of effort. It’s also somewhat dangerous because if some hardware gave out, I would drop.

But how do you all get up over the transom? I was looking at rope ladders, but they will just lay flush against the transom.

in order to picture the actual situation and avoid mental pictures that are a little different from the real situation, it’s like this:

You are standing in your dinghy, and there is a wall in front of you. The top of the wall is just within your reach if you put your arm up and reach up high. You have to get up over that wall. From the dinghy.
