Ban on fishing for blue cod in Marlborough Sounds

I don't think any of you outside NZ will care but many of the NZders on this site will be interested in this.

I say it is a good thing.

Ban on fishing for blue cod in Marlborough Sounds - 03 Jul 2008 - NZ Herald: New Zealand National news

It should have been for all fish.

I wish they would do it for the Kahawai that are being decimated up here in the North.
There was an item on telly the other night that was discussing the effect of the diesel costs on small commercial fishermen, one guy in Lyttelton said they only get around $2 to $3 per kg of wet fish, yet it retails for $18 up to $30+ a kg in the supermarkets.

I wouldn't mind if they banned all fishing in the Sounds. Keen fishermen can easily go out into the Strait to fish. Seems silly fishing the Sounds till they are barren.

It will be cheaper once Aunty Helen gets the railways sorted....yeah right.

We have not seen anything yet when it comes to eliminating entire species of fish. We are well on our way.

Both NZ & Iceland are countries that have good examples of commercial fisheries management.

Blue cod may be currently stressed in the Sounds because of all the yuppie's (am not referring to Sir Wheeler ) down there.

I can say that area's I've fished on both coasts away from the yuppie's there's an abundance of certain types of fish species. In-fact, at anchorage (during a blow) up the east coast (north of white rock) I've caught 2 cray's with a hook & lure[1] (no bait) while being bored & throwing over a handline.

[1] cray's very rarely take to hooks (hence the use of trap pots with bait).
