Fuel sender

I have a gulf star 60 and none of the fuel or water tank gauges work. The picture is of a fuel tank. Any info on what type of sender it is would be helpful. Thanks a lot in advance. Rbrb

I see no picture.

You have several choices with senders. Mechanical in tank senders or differential pressure options like the tank tender.

I just replaced the sender unit on our fuel tank this weekend. I have analog gauges. If you also have analog gauges, make sure you have power to the gauge, the wires leading to your sender unit have good conductivity, then check that the sender unit, if analog, reads and varies the resistance ( 33-240 Ohms).

I used this sender unit to replace my old defective analog sender.

I also am adding sending units to my water tanks. The water tanks have a visual gauge on the tank. To view the water level, you need to lift the mattress, climb over and site the gauge through a little hole in the wood bunk frame. That is the case for both tanks. Not easy, so its not done as we should. Gauge on the dash would be most helpful.

rbrb...We have a Gulfstar M53 - dealing with the same issue our analog units are just not reliable anymore. I agree with DavefromNZ...when upgrading - go with the best. Ultrasonic sending units do require "programming" - but once you have the math right - you will be grateful for the accuracy. We are retrofitting with BEP on our our fuel (x2), water and waste tanks.

I went to full Wema Gauges in all my tanks , just have to order the right length of shaft for the depth of the tank , Work great , full analog. On older boats sometimes just retrofitting with new is easer then trying to repair the old antiquated technology . I tore out an old ultrasonic system that never worked .

looks like a Wema sender unit , take it out and make sure the float is sliding up and down freely and that it isn't full of fuel .

If it is free , you can use an ohm meter and check that the resistance is changing as you move the float . It should move between 240 - 33 ohms

Probably. It doesn't look like a Wema unit to me, but it is still most likely to be a compatible resistive type. However, note that there are two different standards:

• American standard, 240 ohm at empty, 30 ohms at full
• European standard, 0 ohms empty, 180 ohms at full

My first test would be to disconnect it and check the resistance is in one of these ranges. Then turn on whatever switch is required and check one of the wires goes to about 12V. Finally, check if the gauge is now showing empty or full.

Just a little more info; the Ultrasonic sender fit a standard float switch tank hole size. Yes you need to install the BEP DC 600 http://www.bepmarine.com/en/80-600-0022-00. However this is also superb.

I bought the program hardware adapter for the Ultrasonic and it was very easy to connect to my computers USB to calibrate the various tanks odd dimensions. I now have accuracy to within a few liters (1 gallon). I can set any tank size and high or low alarm. I use the BEP 600 to monitor my DC electrics and there are many other functions.

PS I have no commercial interest in BEP, I just like it.

Hello and thanks again...for the record the senders were Rochester with ohms from 240 to 30... this weekend i am going to try to get them out and checked over...it takes a 2 3/8 inch socket and all but one are completely frozen...thanks again...rb
