Snowgoose 37 rudders

Ive a problem with a "knocking rudder" on my snowgoose 37. The noise at anchor in a swell is not loud put persistent and annoying
I have replaced the linkages and had the pintle /lower rudder support rebuilt but the problem remains.
I thought it must be the rudder shaft/tangs within the rudder that must have come loose but when i took the rudder off completely and tried to turn the shaft while holding the rudder i was unable to get any movement.
However when the rudder is installed there is a 1 inch side to side movement of the trailing edge with no discernible movement of the shaft.
Am I missing something or do i just need to split the rudder to check the tangs are firmly attached to the fiberglass.
The other rudder is absolutely fine with no movement.
Thanks in advance for any advice

On my Leopard the shaft was loose on the blade. Enough to move one or 2 inches. Yes I had to split it and resolve the internal problem.all good now

Re: Snowgoose 37 rudders

Put your detective hat on. There’s a few possibilities. While there is no shaft the short rods at each end of the rudder could be fitting into rounded out holes in the top plate or bottom support. There could be vertical play between the top plate above the rudder, the rudder and the bottom support. This was happening to me. There’s also two steering gear boxes that can introduce some play.
