In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Has anyone installed an in-line filter with see-through bowl in the discharge or their water pump">raw water pump ? I'm considering installing on a new Yanmar 80hp so that I can see if there are any rubber impeller vanes that have failed - also would minimize inter-cooler tube plugging. What are the pros and cons?

You mean like a small sea strainer?

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

I've used a standard Graco strainer plumbed into my raw water pump outlet for several years now. Same size as the one near the thru-hull (1/2 inch in my case). No problems, flow is the same. Has caught impeller pieces on 2 occasions.

Jamhass, yes that's what I am considering. Thanks for the feedback.

S/V Jedi has also done that and has posted pictures of his installation.

Its one of my future projects. Its a common problem, even if one does their maintenance. All it takes is to run it dry to overheat and damage impellers.

Hmm, not one I've thought of before. I'll have to visit S/V Jedi's post & to take a look.

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Your raw water impeller may send its blades in many places like the heat exchanger, or into the engine block. In fact you would be lucky if they pass trough. Why not replace your black rubber impeller with a new blue neoprene(I think) impeller that is garanty to resist 15 minutes running without water?. I have done that and I checked my 8 year old impeller. It looks new!...

Good idea! But why not add them both. Better safe then sorry!

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Yep all good but how about a triple, neoprene impeller, Speedseal removable cover followed by a Graco in-line filter.

Nice idea - if I can fit one in there, I have just added one more thing to the to do list (along with the run dry impellors).

Thanks !

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Speedseal is a good idea. In general, but... In my case My blue impeller seems to resist time(many years) without showing any risk of failure. So no real need to open the pump to check the impeller... for years. Although I think the speedseal is a good thing. As for the filter, I franckly don't see the real practical utility, with an impeller that resist time and never loose blades. In fact I wounder is adding a restriction to the water flow(a filter) will increase the backpressure on exhaust valves.

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Hi Ellie, good to hear that your Blue impeller has lasted - I don't believe that that the Graco filter will add any appreciable flow restriction to the raw water flow. For me knowing the status of the blades and preventing inter-cooler plugging is a benefit.

Re: In line filter for raw water pump discharge

Catalysis,
You are right, a Groco filter is huge, has a great flow capacity, and it would not make much of an obstruction. The exhaust pipe is large, and the filter would have to be of adequate size... Expensive maybe?. Its like having belt and suspenders to keep your pants up.
