Plugging up unused water hoses

Hi there. We are removing a clothes washer from our boat and I am looking for the best way to plug the unused hoses.

There's not much information to work with here. Could you describe the hoses? In the general case, a short piece of PVC pipe that fits the inside diameter, glue on a cap, and then apply a hose clamp, but the advice could range all the way to shutting down a seacock. Drain? Part of your pressurized water system? Ribbed?

3/4 inch hose feeding a clothes washer after my pressure pump. I will disconnect from the washer and I will be left with an open end hose the needs to be plugged.

Are there ready made plugs for this sort of thing? Nothing ribbed, nothing big.

It most likely is fed off a "T" connected at the pump which presumably feeds other stuff too. If so, just remove the "t" fitting. If not, it is a dedicated pump which should be removed and the feed line disconnected.

If it's a common garden hose fitting, use a common garden hose plug. Try a hardware store.

Bill beat me too it. Most washing machines use garden hose connectors. You can get plugs or caps at a hardware store. If it doesn't have a garden hose fitting, you can install one and cap it.

If you're never going to use the hoses again, remove them.

Plugs are OK for temporary disconnects. For permanent disconnects, it is better to revise the plumbing to eliminate the connection and potential future leak point.

I had a similar situation last year; in my case I needed a temporary way of sealing off a pipe. I found a dumpy SS bolt that was a tight fit into the hose, then clamped it in place with a hose clip. Was unobtrusive, worked fine and would probably suffice as a permanent fix.

Not a good perm fix.

A) Another term for this is a PRV. (Pressure Relief Valve). If the pressure within the hose exceeds the friction and clamping force on the bolt, "Fire" (not likely to be "ready" and hopefully without "aim" at anything important. (OK, moreso with an air line than water, but you get my drift.)

B) When (not if) the hose deteriorates, it will need to be removed or replaced. If not addressed in time, a leak will occur.

In all cases it is wise to remove wiring, plumbing, and virtually any component or system that will never be needed, nor add boat value. It just avoids future problems (or the potential for them).
