Can I buy you dinner?:Cruising Family In Fort Lauderdale

My wife and I are thinking of throwing in the towel and sailing round the world with our kids. Big decision.

We sorely need to meet and talk to a family who has already done this.

Can we take you out to dinner to pick your brains?

Kids welcome too!

Many thanks!

Re: Can I buy you dinner?:Cruising Family In Fort Lauderdale

Just do it, we did with our 3 kids and it was among this best decisions of my life. Now 13 years since our return from a 7 year circumnavigation the kids all have university degrees are very close to each other sharing victories and problems even though one is in Tasmania, one in the Philippines, and one in Queensland Australia. Maybe coping with a common problem "the parents" who are offcruising again helps strengthen the codependency!

Based on the thread title, I'll make a wild guess that they are in Fort Lauderdale.

There's at least a dozen good blogs out there of people doing it. S/V Totem (as mentioned) for one.

Re: Can I buy you dinner?:Cruising Family In Fort Lauderdale

I left Cape Town to sail around the world back in 1988, but got sidetracked by a woman here in the States. Now that our kids are grown we're getting ready to go finish the trip together. Recently bought the boat, and starting to get it, and ourselves, ready for the trip. I don't have any experience cruising with kids, but I know people who have, and not one has regretted it. We're in Fort Lauderdale too (Coral Springs to be more precise), perhaps we can compare notes, go sailing together, or just drink a beer or two...

Regards,
David

You can indeed - what about the flights? We started full time in '95 and our four kids appeared along the way. The twins, eldest, are now ashore for full time education - fire away with any questions you might have.

Sure! In Stuart now with our 18 year old who started when she was 3. See blog for minor details.

Private message, we'll be down in Lauderdale sometime over the next two weeks!

I vote for DO IT! You only get one life to live...make it count!
It will be hard, yes, but you will be closer and stronger for it. Sailing with my kids when they were young formed a strong bond between us...trust, communication, caring. You can't put a price on that. DO IT. It will be awesome. And if its not...at least you tried, no regrets.

Don't forget to let us know what happens.
