Re: Galveston Meet Up

Cool, let me know if he would want to lead the soft shackle work shop with me, if not I'll get a rigger friend that I think is very knowledgable too. I will try to do all the foot work so the rigger/knot dude just has to show up and give instructions and pointers, maybe show tools he finds most helpful, etc.

Bill - don't worry about breakfast. We will buy all the groceries and handle the logistics. Sounds like you got plenty of other stuff to worry about

I would love to see the sail repair. I am getting pretty proficient at soft shackles.

Re: Galveston Meet Up

Those coming from the west in the GIWW, remember that the Pelican Island Bridge is down until the end of the year or next year with 12 foot clearance for maintenance, so come through Pelican Cut and east around Bolivar Road to southeast Alternative Galveston Channel entrance by the sunkin SS Selma.

Hope to be there too!

Re: Galveston Meet Up

I would LOVE to see someone do a yacht braid splice, I have all the fids an all an can't get it to work. Listening to a person who has just been in the Carribean would also be interesting to find out the ins and outs an all. Just finished my bimini last night so just have to put it on. Now working on a Boomkin in SS so I can have a backstay. It would be nice to hear from the North sail person you mentioned, maybe he could look at our rigs and give some suggestions. Mark the manager for WM Galveston said he would put a flier in his window for us. He has a Tayana 37 next to me(Port) he is restoring. Also to my Starboard, Hal Devaney who is the Flicka-20.com modiraiter is interested as well.

Re: Galveston Meet Up

If you mean for a double braid splice, I found this video to be very helpful.

Or did you need a different splice?

Re: Galveston Meet Up

+1 on that video. I was having trouble with my spice and that video fixed it. He even says "this is where most people go wrong", and it was, indeed, where I was going wrong.

Ocean Girl, we are not cruisers yet, but we are Texans and would love to go to the meet up. We are interested in any of the speakers/demonstrations you listed.

Re: Galveston Meet Up

Dang Tony, we will miss you!! Hopefully we will meet up in a pretty anchorage one day. Are you headed east?

I have been waiting to see the head count before I zero in on a speaker. I think basic sail repair would be great with a splicing/knot workshop so the power boaters have some fun too. . Beginning of February is a bunch of doctor related stuff for me, after that I can throw my energies into this.

Re: Galveston Meet Up

I'm not sure what is happening with this or if this meet up is still in the works. I was asked to commit to an event here in Dallas on April 6th and I accepted since this thread seems to have stopped. I am sorry if I missed something and the gathering is happening. I would love to meet some other cruisers and future cruisers.

Re: Galveston Meet Up

Thanks, Bill. I would rather be in Galveston meeting you and other cruisers, but it isn't going to happen this time for me.

I hope lots of people show up!
