Land and Boat Crew for Arctic Mission

We are looking for volunteers for theLand Radio and Research Mission, which will occur for two-three weeks in August 2018. This mission will occur partially on sea and mostly on land where volunteers and researchers conduct experiments in the area near Ny-Alesund in Svalbard. During that period, volunteers will assist will create and maintain a campsite, while conducting scientific research experiments and supporting the boat crew that is participating in the AISE (Airship Italia Search Expedition.) The boat crew will transmit radio messages to the land crew, who will then broadcast them to radio receivers around the world, giving them almost-live feedback about the status of the search expedition, which is focussed on finding the remains of the airship known as Italia, which was lost near the North Pole in a tragic accident in 1928. 90 years after the tragedy, the World Arctic Fund hopes to find the airship remains and give the world play-by-play details while doing so. You can be a part of this as history is made - by revisiting and rediscovering history. Plus - you can help to research microplastics, pollution and climate change. It will cost 2,800 euros to participate in this, to cover the costs for insurance, food and the training you will need to have.

Re: Land and Boat Crew for Arctic Mission

“Volunteers” <> “It will cost”.

With that said, sounds very interesting. We’ll be in Iceland in August, so unavailable this year. Otherwise, I’d seriously consider “volunteering.”

Re: Land and Boat Crew for Arctic Mission

Hi,

I am a radio professional, I have extensive experience as part of my job operating radio in adverse conditions. As part of my job I support SAR, Police, fire and Ambulance in Yukon territory.

I winter camp a lot, and enjoy it. I just came back from two years in the high arctic of Canada doing satellite communications installations.

I am also a sailor, I have my own 50ft steel boat, but i have minimal offshore experience, Only one week of offshore sailing. However I have competent crew and Day skipper licenses.

If this sounds interesting to you or you think I would be a good fit, let me know, and I will provide my resume.

Regards,

Jon Moraal, Whitehorse Yukon
