In Search of Rod Ends

I'm trying to find two replacement rod-ends for our Prout Snowgoose 37. I started out trying to find stainless and then non-stainless, but I"m still coming up short - does anyone know where I can find rod-ends as follows:
  • Female thread 9/16 - 18
  • one LH thread, other RH thread
  • Approx 3" from end to center hole
I can work with a built in stud as shown below (current) or a hole for a bolt.

I'd check an automotive parts store. Look like typical tie-rod ends you would find on a car nothing especially boaty about them. Take them in and ask the parts guys to find a match.

Fiveslide,

I've had no luck with the automotive guys - unless I can tell them which car it came off!

(I do know it was an old British car from the 1950s-70s...)

Try an online industrial supply house, such as McMaster Carr

Maybe larger ones and bush them down, or re-thread the tie bar?

I hate when people are too lazy to be of any help. Someone, somewhere, has to be willing to do comparisons with what is on the shelf, that's what it will likely take. I've found people like that, occasionally.

I wish you luck.

What you want it's made by trw... Try Amazon or even eBay... You should be able to get exactly what you were looking for... In stainless even.

Maybe above will help. Also send your pic to Ruth or Tim at Klacko in Oakville, they have a huge can do mentality, if they can't help they will know who can - klackospars@bellnet.ca

Perhaps you can find some British care forums. I'm willing to be that someone will recognize them by sight. I am a fan of old VWs, Porsches and Alpha Romeos and I can recognize a fair number of parts just by sight.

Good luck.

Re: In Search of Rod Ends

Hi replaced them on my Snowgoose about a year ago. Don't remember off hand the company and will not be near the electronic memory for a couple of days. I went to Google put in the specs, specified stainless steel and found a million. Price shipped and I think spent about $50 each. Might have been for the pair. Automoti e suppliers didn't cerry stainless if I remember correctly.

IF that doesn't work let me know and I will dig.

Re: In Search of Rod Ends

try your local auto breakers yard, get even a nackered one with the correct thread sizes etc then you can order new ones,, just remember that the UK cars of that era were still not converted onto metric, unlike EU ( eg, VW Porsche Alfa etc ) so you can avoid all the euro and Jap ones , plenty of wrecked US in the junk yards I believe they are still imperial ( or whatever you call it )

Re: In Search of Rod Ends

I’d forget trying to match up to the originals and just change to heim joints. Robust and readily available in pretty much any materials, sizes, thread configurations etc.

Re: In Search of Rod Ends

There's a reasonable chance they're Ford Cortina rod ends. They're still about the cheapest around and readily available.
