Opinions on Hunter Passage 42

Any comments on a Hunter Passage 42?
I'm looking for a reasonable Boat with a big bed in the owners cabin.

Thanks in advance!

I think they are great boats, however since they came out in 1990 the boat you look at could be 20 plus years old so get a survey done before buying.

After the 410 of course

Really now I looked pretty hard at the 42CC before I got my 410 and didn't really find anything to not like (not counting the CC verse AC battle).

Read though the ower reviews here

Re: Opinions on Hunter Passage 42

They are roomy and nice and have a roomy aft deck layout. Cockpit is a tad cramped but thats fine for offshore work and makes more room elsewhere. They are or at least feel very high out of the water. I have only sailed on one, so I am sure someone else can give better details.

Assuming that we're talking about the version built on the vision hull, I've sailed one for two weeks in the BVI, and it was a great boat. Roomy, good sailing and solid. much better than the new series without a back stay.

The 410 and the 420 are actually built on the same hull. One version puts the cockpit in the center, and the other puts it where it ought to be.

Hunter played the same trick with the 450 and the 460. Both boats use the same built-like-a-tank hull, but with divergent cockpit placements.

A good way to keep prices down.

Dedicated generator space is great, but makes engine maintenance a bit of a pain.

They also have one of the best swim platforms of any boat, no ladder , just steps. Great if you are in the tropics and are going in and out of the water constantly .

Also , I agree , .....the older ones , first generation boats were the best .

Re: Opinions on Hunter Passage 42

My friend has one and has been out in some nasty weather. They where going to the louisiades (spelling?)from Oz, I think it was 2008/9 with a rally. The whole fleet got hammerd with most sustaining damage or failures. They made it back home and the only damage they had was some extra noises from two bulk heads and it took a while to track down and fix. So I would say its a good sea boat. The CC is to small if more than 4 are aboard. the swim platform is difficult to use if there is any swell, so you will need a ladder about mid ships, also when at anchor the aft cabin is noisy with and type of chop or wash. Due to its internal volume there is very little storage, you lose the starboard storage under the saloon seat due to ACs and the same with the v berth. on his version both heads go through a holding tank with no direct overboard. But a comfy boat for two with occasional guests. small tank capacity, diesel and water. very difficult and costly to fit a water maker.

What was the problem with the bulkheads? Do you know?

Re: Opinions on Hunter Passage 42

There are big differences between the passage 42 (1989 to 1998) and the 420 (1990-?)

Make sure we're talking the same boat...

I believe the 420 was made from 1998-2003.
